From the website:
-- On2 will make a developer evaluation and personal use license for the VP6 encoder available to companies or developers that register at the On2 website. Developers and companies will now be able to encode files for playback on the PC. Companies and developers wishing to make commercial use of the VP6 encoder will have to execute the necessary paid license with On2. The download will also be available at a number of other sites that will be announced with the product launch in early October.

I think it will be better after the release of new Xvid binary/DivX 5.1 with speed improvements. If possible Nero Digital too....

I've seen VP6 preview and I wasn't surprised. 1000kbps looks like at 600 with others codecs. Also, VP6 is 1-pass only.

well.. I guess now I can confirm that the next comparison will include VP6 unless On2 changes their minds in the last minute.

Well, i don't expect too much from it either. They made too much hype and false statements from their codecs (like VP4 beats mpeg4 codecs easily). But we'll see.

well first pr about vp4 is dated 2001.03.27, at that time it was very competitive or maybe best.

I think divx3 and wmv already existed then. Both were clearly better.

BTW, i don't know what to think about this press release. VP4 is already free, and vp6 is reachable only for developers, but not for users.

VP6 is for users too, only a simple form to fill and then download. Even I could get it!
