How does one determine it?

Stick the disc in your dvd writer.
Load dvd decrypter.
switch to ISO Write mode.

It will say the Manufacturer ID in the little info screen on the right.

Thanks! DVDDecrypter indicates that the current set of discs from cdrdvdrmedia are PRODISCG02 and will burn 1X with my Toshiba sd-r5002, which is what they do. They are advertised, however, as being "True 2X" with this burner. I have firmware 1033. Why don't they burn 2X?

No idea, but the two firmwares I've used on the toshiba won't let you write at 2x speed with the prodiscs. So prety much they lied on the website.

Asit turns out, all the discs that have burned 2X with my sd-r5002 have the code TDKG02, outside of some pricey Verbatim. This does include some TDK brand name from Best Buy that were only $48 for 25. It appears that 2X discs are disappearing in favor of the 4X.

What generics have burned 2X with this burner?
