right, a week ago or so I bought a new motherboard (GA-7NNXP - gigabyte). I fully realise that most likely I shot my self in the foot by buying a gigabyte motherboard but if you look at it's list of features you can see why I decided to risk it. I've put my systme together and the first thing that happens is that Windows XP Pro SP1 would not start. If I used safe mode (where it displays the drivers that it loads), windows would crash when it gets to an MPEG.sys which was located in c:\windows\system32\drivers. What I did then is moved that file manually using the recovery console to a temp directory. Then windows would hang when it gets to an MUP.sys. I got fed up with this and decided to reinstall windows.
Now comes the weirdness. I can use both my pioneer cd-writer and my generic dvd-rom to read cds, cd-rs and dvds - all with data format. But I could not use normal dvd video discs. what happens is - after insertion of the dvd I get the standard autoplay thingy of XP that asks you to select what to play the dvd with (at this point I don't have any PowerDVD or anything else installed), I select play with windows media player (just to test) and it tells me unknown or undefined error. I can view the files on the dvd (vobs and ifos) in explorer. I can open non-encypted vobs with vdub-mod. I can't open enrypted ones. I checked dvd region of the drive, player, and the dvd - they are all R2.
Next I install powerdvd. Now I can play the dvd in powerdvd and other players but DVD Decrypter and Smart Ripper cannot read the dvd. dvd decrypter says drive not ready, smart ripper says I need to open the movie in a dvd player (which I did). Another thing I just noticed is I can't write using the cd-writer neither with nero or anything else. I checked all the hardware connections, I checked driver settings and everything else I can think of, I reinstalled windows 3 times now. I am using latest drivers and latest bios (and I tried with older drivers and bios as well). My only guess is that windows xp has somekind of dvd decoder (note that MPEG.sys driver problem above) or somekind of ide bus mastering system that i am missing. The only reason i wnat to fix this is to start ripping dvds again. Right now I can only play dvds in powerdvd. I am also guessing that the same thing is hampering my cd-writer.
