I'm totally newbie to linux. I have amd athlon (1700+) and i've been using windows to encode my mpeg-1, mpeg-2 and mpeg-4 [XviD(VDub), CCE, TMPGEnc etc ].. now i would like to know is there any great software to do my mpeg encoding. And the fastest way to encode things?

For DVD to mpeg4 look at tuxrip, it is straightforward, and comes with a guide on how to install all needed softwares : http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=60599
If you use a packages based distribution, you can install it in a few minutes.
Even if you don't use tuxrip, you can take advantage of the install guide.

If you are used to get perfect quallity under win maybe with CCE you'll really have a problem under Linux.

I searched a long time and found nothing. Only wine could be a solution, but I think this will decrease speed.

Now, some weeks ago I found the information that MainConcept now has a new version of MainActor for Linux. Maybe this tool uses the new MainConcept MPEG Encoder. Maybe this is the best solution under Linux atm. quallity should be like TMPG.

CCE runs just fine under wine, and at a comparable speed. See here (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=55377) for more info.

Mad.

Transcode (http://www.theorie.physik.uni-goettingen.de/~ostreich/transcode/) is your friend. Use the cluster mode for speed.

So you are saying that you could use transcode to make a dvd9 2 dvd5 backup with this program? Had a look at the page but I was not really shure if it would work.

It does. It could be built with mpeg2 encoding export module.
