Hello everyone, I am new to the world of divx creation (although I read all the guides) and I have a couple of issues/questions I need to address.

First of all, all of my projects are started from pre-ripped files using DVD Decrypter. There is no need for subs and, last but not least, all my projects are anime material.

My First problem is with Robot 4 Rip: whether it be a DVD or HD source project the DVD2AVI step just won't load.

Here is the log:

It reaches the line marked above and at that point DVD2AVI loads up but doesn't do anything. It stays like that until I close it at which point it fails (obviously). I tried changing DVD2AVI's version, hiding the process but to no avail. I'm guessing its a simple syntax error but I'm really bad at figuring these out.

My other issue is a little harder to deal with, all my movies are anime. I have read with great interrest jggimi, manono and hakko504's "Force Film, IVTC, and Deinterlacing - what is DVD2AVI trying to tell you and what can you do about it" guide and like Manono said "the greatest skill is requiered" to work with animes. I, however, am just starting at this and I would greatly appreciate some support on the issue. I am currently encoding the Cowboy Bebop and Evangelion tv series the first of which has 30fps 3d effects over the original 23fps. I tried to encode with doctor divx but as expected I get poor deinterlacing and slowed down animation over some parts of the episodes namely the openig and ending credits.

Thank you for reading!

Welcome to the Forum

Ok first of all good luck with your anime encodes. You'll soon learn to hate them ;) Not trying to discourage you, but some of them can be a pain in the ass. For instance I must tell you right now that you’re unless your Evangelion series is the new remastered Japanese version; you’re not going to get it to IVTC properly. It’s just the way they were mastered, and there is nothing you can do to fix it. Trust me I’ve tried and so have many others before us. I’ve done Cowboy Bebop in the past and I was able to use Force Film on all but maybe 2 episodes.

Ok now onto your problem with DVD2AVI, have you tried using the program manually? Start DVD2AVI and press F5 to start a preview. In that preview box, check to see if it’s a 4:3 or 16:9 movie, and also note the frame rate. The most important part is to check if the movie is either FILM or FILM above 95%, then you can enable Force Film. Some people will say that you won’t get a perfect IVTC if it’s not pure FILM. If it’s not then leave Force Film off and you will have to perform a manual IVTC later. Also set the audio to demux all tracks and then you can process those later in Gknot. BTW I highly recommend you use Gknot for your first rip.

I hope this helps you start.

Thanks for the reply.

I did play around with DVD2AVI manually but not much since the whole idea of using robot4rip for me was to use the queue function (I am encoding the episodes one by one).

As for the animes ;) I kinda knew it would be tough but since for the major part size is not really an issue (I try to make every episode 350megs) should I consider making all the movies 30fps for the sake of simplicity?

Bump

Please could anyone help me with the problems I listed? At least enough so I could get robot4rip to work correctly.

Hi-

In Tools-Preferences-Indexing/Demuxing, make sure the path leads to DVD2AVI. Also check the DVD2AVI version. I believe that for Robot4Rip it has to be version 1.76. I'm not positive that'll solve the problem, though. I seem to remember some other threads about the problem. Maybe search the GKnot Forum for threads from other people with a similar problem.

should I consider making all the movies 30fps for the sake of simplicity?

Maybe for the sake of simplicity, but not for the sake of quality. If you just deinterlace 30fps, you'll wind up with a blurry mess. And you'll also have 20% lesser quality for the same file size when compared to IVTCing down to 24fps.

Edit a few minutes later: In Cowboy Bebop, the credits are 30fps and will play jerky when IVTC'd or Force Filmed, but I never found that to be much of a problem. That mixed 30fps and 24fps stuff is fairly rare, though. If the results bother you, you might try Decomb's Decimate Mode 3 to try and handle it better. It'll handle the 24fps stuff normally, and blend the 30fps stuff to get it down to 24fps and play reasonably smoothly.

And as Hiro2k said, Evangelion is near impossible to IVTC, and one valid solution is to keep it at 30fps. I never much liked that solution, though, and IVTC'd it anyway. There have been threads about Evangelion, and a search will turn some of them up.
