Remapping streams with DVDdecrypter - does this really work???

I want to backup some DVDs to get rid of FBI warnings, extras and the menu. Plus, I want to remove unwanted audio streams and subtitle languages and make a specific language the standard audio and subtitle language streams.

I rip the DVD with DVDdecrypter. I've tried both IFO and File mode. I've enabled stream processing, selected the desired audio/subtitle stream and remapped them to 0x80 for audio and 0x20 for subtitle.

If I open the ripped IFO file with IFOedit, the stream structure is still the same as on the DVD. All streams exist and are mapped to their original IDs. To generate new IFO files I process the files with VOB extras and strip out the unwanted streams. The new IFO file then contains only the two desired streams, however they are still mapped to their original IDs (for example 0x84 instead of 0x80).

What am I doing wrong?

Check the vobs in VOBEdit. I've just done a test and it remapped the streams just fine.

When you select the audio streams to strip in DVDDecrypter there is a remapping that must be done. Below the check boxes for the audio streams, you need to map 0xE4 to 0xE0 for example, otherwise the streams keep their oroginal stream ids.

Unless its something I've fixed in (for) 3.1.7.0 without knowing it, it should work fine. Please let me know if it doesnt! Mind you, there's not much I can do about it because it works ok for me.... I did only try IFO mode though, perhaps I'd better check File mode too.
I'll go do that now :)

Thank you for your support! Unfortunately I'm in the office right now, so I can't do the VOBEdit check right now... However, I guess that I will come to the same results as you did. But then I'm wondering why it is possible that in IFOEdit the streams ID still show the original IDs...???

Is this the new IFO that IFOEdit has made having scanned the vobs?

Sounds weird! Check the vobedit thing when you get a chance and then you'll know for sure if its dvd decrypters problem or ifoedits!

The IFO file my program copies over is not updated so it would still show the streams in their original state.

Oh, I see. I always thought DVDdecrypter would (or should) update the IFO file. I've checked now the VOB files, the streams are mapped correctly. Sorry about thinking that DVDdecrypter had an error.

But if I have remapped the streams and IFOEdit doesn't notice that, does that mean that IFOEdit will write IFO files which do not correspond to the remapped VOB files??? How can I tell IFOEdit to adjust the IFO files to the remapped streams in the VOB files?

When you tell it to create new vobs, it knows nothing of the old ones and should create new ones base on the vobs in their current state. So, it should see your remapped stream as 0x80 - how you want it to!

Ok. But in the new IFO file that IFOEdit generated the streams are still mapped to the original IDs. Not as they are mapped in the VOB files.

Well I have no idea where it's getting that info from! If VOBEdit confirms the streams have been remapped, I cant see why IFOEdit doesnt notice.

When I started out I was having lots of problems trying to use DVDDecrypter to strip the streams and then have it play later. As Lightning says, the original IFOs are copied across, so they don't match what is in the stripped vobs.

You than have to run IFOEDIT to create new IFOs. If you have to make that pass, you may as well have DVDDecrypter do a full rip and then let IFOEDIT select the streams and create new IFOS that match. This always worked for me.

Another option is to use something like DVDShrink or DVD2ONE to do the stream stripping and create good IFOS in the same job.
