This is a method that will allow you to create a DVD clips compilation (eg, pulling your favourite scenes off various DVDs and putting them in a compilation) that does NOT require any recompression or demuxing of any kind. It maintains the full, original video quality and whatever audio & subtitles you want. It works on standalones. Best of all, it's DAMNED EASY. I've been searching for this for a looooong time and I think I've finally got it.
I'm not an expert, but it should work. I won't give very detailed steps since this method uses info covered in excellent & clear guides covered elsewhere. Once you've read them, you should know what I'm talking about very easily.
First of all, check out the DVD compilation method at: http://www.geocities.com/how2editdvd/index.htm
READ THAT. You're going to be using everything from step 4 on.
The problems with that method are:
1) Editing is a gigantic pain in the ass and extremely time-consuming if you want precise edits.
2) At least for me, IFOEdit was very touchy with vobs created using smartripper & vstrip. At best I could create the IFOs, but IFOEdit ALWAYS crashed when I tried to correct the nav points (ie, so no proper fast forward and reverse in the DVD).
SO, essentially what I'm doing here is replacing their first 3 steps (ripping/editing steps) with my own. After that, you just use their remaining steps to complete.
Quite simply, the solution is to use DVDshrink to rip & edit your clips.
First, read the incredibly clear and simple DVDshrink guides at: http://www.dvdshrink.info/guides.php (especially the 1st and 3rd ones for dvdshrink 2.3)
HERE IS THE METHOD:
1) Load up a DVD with a desired scene in DVD Shrink
2) In DVDshrink's "re-authoring" mode, use the "start/end" feature to choose the scene you want. Hit "backup" to create a new vob & ifo set containing only the clip. You can delete the created .ifo files. For now, rename the produced .vob file to something else (eg, geeky1.vob). Notice how incredibly easy it was to choose precise start & end points. Wow. Make sure you have no recompression selected to ensure full quality.
3) Repeat steps 1 & 2 for every DVD that contains clips you want. Remember, each time you do it, rename the created vobs to something else (a new one each time of course), since dvdshrink produces the same filenames and you don't want the other ones to be overwritten.
4) Go to http://www.geocities.com/how2editdvd/index.htm and start at step 4 (Joining clips). Just follow everything that is mentioned in the guide. Because the vobs were ripped & edited in one step by DVDshrink, they're "clean" and ifoedit doesn't have any problems handling them. At the end, you should have a set of VOBs and IFOs and you're ready to burn the DVD.
NOTE: When you're joining your clips, use a clip with many audio tracks as the first one in the sequence. This makes more audio track "spaces" available for the remaining clips in case they have multiple audio tracks. Eg. if you use a clip with 3 audio tracks as the first in the set, then the rest can use as many as 3 audio tracks as well. You could always fix this manually with IFOedit, but this is easier.
YOU'RE DONE! You're pretty much good to go. See next message for some more advanced stuff or issues.
