Hi fellas,

So I'm converting DV to DVD and I've got my source files - 30GB in total avi. I've done my editing on it and it looks like I now have to save that as one big avi and then convert it using something like VirtualDub - does this sound correct? I went to save it as an avi with 720x420 resolution - 29.97fps, 44100 sound etc but ran out of disc space - is this right or am I now supposed to save it as mp2?


Any help - guidance will be appreciated!

mp2 is a mpg sound file. What codec are you planning to use. Xvid produces excellant results. You will also want to compress the audio, probably mp3. VirtualDub will do the trick. Get a copy of the Xvid encoding guide on www.doom9.org. btw welcome to the forum.

This sounds like you're doing something completely wrong. You said that you tried to follow the DV to DVD guide. The guide doesn't mention to use VirtualDub.

After cutting, adding effects etc. you start with saving your work to a DV AVI file (which is probably less than 30 GB despite you didn't cut anything), and you save the audio to a separate WAV file. Then simply follow the guide step by step.

Hi guys thanks for the replies. bb you are correct I got mixed up - I've read the guide and too many posts and somewhere in there was VirtualDub, which I guess stuck bc I use that program myself. I haven't saved this file to avi yet because I don't have enough drive space. I'm using ArcSoft's Showbiz and it doesn't seem to give an option for a DV AVI, it just says avi and then I have to choose the screen size 720x480. Maybe I should use a different software package??? Also with the saving the audio track separately - how to I recombine them (a/v) afterwards? Sorry I know these are probably dumb questions, I'm new to it and trying to learn.

What are you using to edit? Quite a few editing packages will allow you to output your edited masterpiece directly to MPEG2, others will allow you to author your DVD directly, ie produce menus etc and save in DVD format (VOBs). e.g. Pinnacle Studio 8 does this. This may be a good solution for you as you have limited disk space.

Hmm when done with editing I usually don´t save the work in a DV Codec. This would cause additional compression artefacts.
If you have enough diskspace use huffyuv or raw. If you like the comfye way: Premiere -> Procoder Export.
I always render "Master Streams" (except if I am just testing).

Maybe CCE does better but, honestly, is that worth the pain?
I am not sure about Procoder/AC3 though but usually DV isn´t dolby digital unless you edit it ;-)
