@MGRip: there can't be "correct" numbers, since we're talking about analogue-resolution!

And this Analogue resolution varies...
(different cable connetions {length, cable quality}, different tape quality etc.)

Not sure if this helps but any analog NTSC video signal is 640x480. A lot of camcorders ads talk about 525 lines of resolution, but the extra 45 lines (525 - 480) are theoretical resolution, not whats actually on your screen.

That's wrong. Analog NTSC is 711x486, typicaly captured as 704x480 (non-Square).

And don't mess up Lines with Scan-Lines. The 525 Lines you are talking about are the horizontal Resolution, not the the vertical.

525@30Hz = NTSC

625@25Hz = PAL

525 are brutto. netto there are 486 with NTSC
625 are brutto. netto there are 576 with PAL

I've never seen a Camcorder Manual which talks about the vertical Resolution. They all are talking about the Lines, not the Scan-Lines.

People are often confused by the term "DV lines": it means how many vertical lines can be separated by the camcorder, thus it is a measure of the horizontal resolution. It is not directly comparable to pixel values, though.

Luma is the Luminance Part of the Video. You can imagine it as a Black and White Picture with the full resolution.
Chroma is the Chrominance. It's the Color-Inforamtion of the Video and do have a low resolution than Luma.

Is the video8 the same as vhs?

It's resolution is nearly the same.

Is today's brodcasting recorded on dv cassetes?

Still mostly in BetaCam SP.
