What am I doing wrong?

I have made my fair share of backups of my DVDs, most of them with DivX5 but also some with XviD. Most of the times I have no problem using XviD but once in a blue moon I backup a dvd and the result is a video image which is skewed 45% (or so) and the colours are also offset. I've tried recoding it with different settings but the result is always the same:

What am I doing wrong? I've tried 3 times now but no result. I'm using GKnot to do this and I'm using a 4-multiplier just to be sure (so video image is always a multiple of 4, I thought this was important). The source material is an interlaced PAL DVD and I use Field Deinterlance (no blend).

Settings: Motion Search Precision: 6 - Ultra High
Quantization Type: H.263
VHQ Mode: Mode Decision 1
Chroma Motion and Quarterpel.
2 B-Frames

Any tips?

Why haven't you tried using multiples of 16? Your post indicates that you yourself suspect an odd resolution as the culprit (and you are right).

Didn't realize I had to go up to 16, I will try that out. I thought I had read somewhere I had to use 4 pixel blocks. Let's hope it works now, so frustrating to have waited 3 x 7 hours :(. Thanks for your help! :D

Just encode a short sample in one-pass and you'll know. No reason to wait that long.

I had the same problem with multiples of 4 some time ago but iirc it wasn't xvid's fault but it was because of some avisynth filters.

I had a similar problem that I solved but couldn't quite explain:

When doing pure VD encoding, XviD has no problems with mod 2 resolutions.

But when I frameserved through AVS (crop, filter & resize) using a mod 4 or mod 2 resolution I got that skewed picture. Mod 8 solved it.

Now the strange part is that this only happened in fast recompress mode. In normal recompress or full processing mode it didn't get skewed, even with mod 2 res! So this problem can't be traced to AVS or one of its filters not suporting lower mods than 8. But what then? Anya ideas?

When encoding with fast recompress virtualdub does not do a colorspace conversion. When doing normal or full processing a colorspace conversion is done. That is the reason the problem disappears.

I believe mod 16 is recommended for all video encoding, though I normally use 16 for width and 8 for height with no problems.

I personally have always used mod 4 for my encodings as it allowed me more presice resolution control.

It's only with the new 2 and 3 beta's (if I recall correctly this problem did not happen with beta 1) that I get this problem also.

Mod 8 (height/width) works fine.

Yes, but the strange thing is that if you set VD to full proc. XviD beta 1.0 excepts mod 2, too.
