How to play Xvid content with DivX 5 codec?

It seems to me that Xvid and DivX 5 are very close and are certainly capable of decoding each other. I have not noticed any weird artifact or drawback when interchanging the codecs for decoding.

What I would like to do is use the DivX 5 direct show filter to decode all my Xvid movies.

The main reason is I have noticed the latest DivX 5 decoder filter use less CPU and is very good at automatically adapting the post processing according to the CPU load without dropped frames. Xvid is much more CPU intensive, has a tendency to lose frame or desync the audio when the CPU is pushed to its limits and although Nic's post-processing is great it cannot adjust automatically its level.

I know how to change the 4cc code in the file header, but that is not a good solution for me. Anyone knows how to do it?

Have you tried using FFDSHOW to playback your XVID and DIVX.

you can do it with Zoom Player Pro
it has an option called: "Customized Media Playback"

search in their forum and you'll see some examples, it works great i did it myself on my brother's P-III 500 so he could watch XviD/DivX movies

divx can't decode all xvid films. For example it is unable to properly decode "packed bitstream".

I know I can ffdshow to playback both content, but I am not looking for a codec that can play everything; I find the divx5 directshow filter much better than the xvid one, and I would like to use it to decode the xvid content.

Thanks. I am not too keen on ZP though. I have tried it many times, everytime prompted by other people enthusiasm but could never find what all the fuss was about. IMHO it has some severe shortcomings, the most important one being not applying the resizing in the video overlay.

I am looking for a solution that would work system wide. ie: have the xvid 4cc code handled by the divx5 DS filter, in the same way it handles DivX 3.11

Interesting. I have not come across such movies, would you care to elaborate? Are "packed bitstreams" compatible with hardware decoders?

change the fourcc to

divx
DX50

It can be done in Media player classic without changing the fourcc.

just use the overrides option under filter in MPC

you have to add divx decoder filter and add the following sub type:

{64697678-0000-0010-8000-00AA00389B71}

and

{44495658-0000-0010-8000-00AA00389B71}


Divx decoder does use less cpu than ffdshow, however, it does not properly decode all xvid movies...you would get some grey and colour smearing.
