I have the drive listed above put in an external USB 2.0 drive casing. How can I upgrade the firmware while its external??

If your firmware upgrade is dos based, you need to find a dos USB driver compatable with your system. Thats about as likely as find a WMD in Iraq!

Otherwise your gunna have to pull the drive and stick it in a computer to do the flash.
