Best software for uploading and editing?

Hi

What do you all use for uploading and editing dv (avi) Files to?

I have got a jvc dv camcorder and firewire card at the mo i am using mgi videowave for my transfer and editing but the end results are not good! Infact very bad i will now be transfering to dvd so quality in the first place is very important and mgi video just does not do that!


So was just wondering what people use!!!

I have got tmpge to transfer to mpeg etc after transfer and edit but just need something good for the first two parts.

I use Sonic Foundry's Vegas Video for transfer, edit and re-encoding and DVD Architect to convert to DVD format (without re-encoding again) and make menus
I can't fault either they are excellent

I guess if I were doing a professional porject I might use CCE or tmpeg to re-encode but I am making family DVD's here.

Even so the above combination gives great results.

I have phoned a m8 of mine who has Sonic Foundry's Vegas 4 but has never used it is it easy to use or not?

Can you explain the basics of it?

The capture is much the same as anything else. You click a button and go away for an hour whilst it captures.


The editing is pretty straight forward. It depends what you want to do.
To do complex stuff requires some reading, to do simple stuff is very straight forward.

You drag your AVI file into the timeline you chop out what you don't want, add transitions or whatever.
You can add sound (even panning 5:1 sound if you like) with ease

I produced a 23 minute family DVD (from a one hour source) with a 5:1 soundtrack cross-fade between clips and some transitions where I wanted them, plus closing credits without reading any instructions.
I then used DVD Architect to add a menu with scene selection and background video and sound again without reading the instructions.

It's pretty intuitive to do the basics.

I might add that software applications is kind of my field of work (not video editing though, I'd never done it before this)so you may find it more difficult to work with

If you want to do advanced stuff it can also do all sorts of gubbins that I haven't even got into yet.


I have also used it to take a Playboy Calender DVD and chop it up and replace the soundtrack with Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here in 5:1 surround, which was a breeze and looks and sounds great.

Ok i have got the software loaded it but thats it now i am stuck i allready have an avi file there so i draged and droped that in the timeline and it starts to record sound?Don't know why!

I am new to this video editing stuff any tutorials you know of for vegas 4?

Allo i want to do there is capture the video from camcorder,cut out bits i don't want, lighten and darken bits which are too light or too dark and save it back as a avi file then i will use tmpgenc to encode it to mpeg for dvd is this going to be hard or not?

Well it shouldn't do that, can't help you on why it is

http://www.creativecow.net/articles/vegasvideo.html is a list of tutorials but they are all for complex stuff although some of the links look promising.

The program help file should deal with all the stuff you want which is very easy to do.


A word of warning DV is bottom field first Tmpeg by default re-encodes top field first. If you re-encode with the wrong field order it will look awful.
