View Full Version : How to play movies with DTS sound using Windows mplayer?

Hi. I can play Dolby Digital trailers using mplayer2, WinDVD, PowerDVD. When I play with mplayer2, it uses CyberLink's codec to play sound. But when I play two of the DTS trailers (the first one is actually Dolby Digital) using mplayer, it doesn't play sound at all. I know I can use WinDVD or PowerDVD but is there anyway to config mplayer to use CyberLink or InterVideo's codec to play the DTS sound? The trailers are from http://www.cinenow.com/us/vobtrailer.php3 . Thanks in advance.

You need a dshow vob-dts demuxer, which (afaik) doesn't exist.
edit: the third one plays fine but that's because it plays the ac3 track (which is apperently also present).

You mean the dts-the_digital_experience.vob? It doesn't play under MS Media Player here. PowerDVD reports that it's DTS 5.1 . How to find that there's also a Dolby track present? What did you use to play the trailer?
If I need a vob-dts demuxer, what is the vob-ac3 demuxer used by mplayer2.exe to play the Dolby trailers? Here is what I see under File -> Properties -> Advanced of mplayer2.exe:
Playing Dolby trailers:
CyberLink Audio Decoder
Default DirectSound Device
Ligos MPEG Splitter
Ligos MPEG Video Decoder
Video Renderer
Playing dts-the_digital_experience.vob:
InterVideo Video Decoder
MainConcept MPEG Splitter
Video Renderer
If it is the CyberLink Audio Decoder then why wouldn't mplayer2 use the same thing to play DTS?
Cheers.

Nope. WMP does not let you choose preferred decoders - it simply uses DirectShow merit 'system' when building the graph.

So, is there no freeware DTS-decoder out there at all (for MediaPlayerClassic or other media-player) to listen to a DTS-track?
Also I'm wondering if I should keep those large (5 to 800Megs) DTS-tracks I ripped using GordianKnot, with the intention of putting them on the same DVD+R(W) together with the 1 to 2 Gig-DivX5-ies for playback on standalones to get the "ultimate" sound combined with good quality DivX-movies...
Can anyone tell me if that would work at all on DivX-standalones (like you can playback multiple AC3 & MP3 streams when they are in the same directory/folder on y're PC using the AudioSwitcher in Vobsub, and if it is possible to do so (if necessary by remuxing the DTS-track as a secondary track with the AVI) would you consider it worth-while?
THKS.

Yes.

I used wmp6.4 and the following elecard show filter: Elecard MPEG Video Decoder (download section of Doom9). Opening the vob in graphedit I saw that this filter was used when playing (and in only decodes AC3 tracks, no DTS).
Why don't you open the vob in a ripper (or vobedit), to see which audio tracks are present?

Of course, you can demux the dts track (do NOT use vstrip for this) and play it. You can mux it with avi/ogm and play it ...

The ligos mpeg splitter, as you can see.

Don't know.

Wilbert,
I followed your guide "avi_dts.pdf" to the letter (i suppose y'r the author (great guide btw!) and managed to install all the necessary filters correctly. MPC6460 and WMP6.4 play fine and don't complain about missing filters anymore but I GET NO SOUND with the DTS-track!
AC3 tracks play fine in all 3 modes: 2.0 analog, 5.1 DigitalOut and SPDIF DolbyDigitalOut on a DTT2500 Digital receiver ("Creative")
Could it be that the SB Live Player 1024 ("Creative") is incapable of DTS thru-put? Neither the 2ch stereo, 2ch surround nor the SPDIF direct output seem to work.
Switching to "digital output only" on Volume Controller makes no difference.
When i use GraphEdit to verify the filters everything looks exactly as you described.
Any suggestions?
(ps, i'm using W2k pro(NL) SP4, and official "LiveDrvUni-Pack(ENG).exe"- driver dated 10/03/2003 from Creative)

Could be. I'm sorry I can't help you with this. Maybe they can help you in the audio forum (using a link to this thread).

Wilbert, I just used Vobedit to open dts-the_digital_experience.vob and found that there's a lot of red DTS symbols there. No yellow DD at all.

Yes, you are right. I didn't know we were talking about different files. I was talking about dts-experience.vob which only has a 5.1 AC3 track. Sorry for the confusion :)
