I've never seen any mention of this here, and chanced on it simply by a stroke of luck with google. Just in case anyone else was in the same boat as me, I thought I'd give a quick plug to gmencoder (http://gmencoder.sourceforge.net/). It's a really nice gtk2 based frontend to mencoder. I've only used it a couple times to convert some large mpeg files to avi, but it's worked like a charm for that at least.

i seem to have a problem compiling gmencoder 0.1.0. when running the 'configure' script it stops because of problems with 'pkg-config'. originally i didn't even have the package installed but i found a version of it in my distros cd rom (pkg-config-0.12)(suse 8.1-gonna be switching to debian really soon though : )). after installing it keeps stoping with a different message though (still about pkg-config) something about library requirements (libgnomeui-2.0) not met, consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH e.v. etc...
any advice?? do i just have to find this library and install it??
any other known requirements?

pkg-config is only a storage for configuration information of diffrent libraries, I kinda wonder how your linux install worked without it... Anyways, pkg-config is not enough, you need the libraries gmencoder is requesting info about throught it.

i downloaded the latest libgnomeui sources but their configure script also prompts for missing libraries!!
i looked up yast2:'install or remove software' (since i'm running a SuSE distro at the moment) and found out that i have all of the required libraries installed (libgnomeui included) but i'm still prompted to adjust my PKG_CONFIG_PATH enviroment variable...
why can't it find the libraries???

you need the 'developemnt' libraries.

what is the difference between the 'development' libraries and the ones i already have??
sorry if i'm being i bit of a pain in the ass and changing the subject of the original post...

The normal libraries are what you need to use software that uses them. The development ones are what you need to compile software that uses them (they include the headers, etc).
In debian all the development packagages share the same name but with an appended -dev (por example, libgnomeui and libgnomeui-dev), don't know in SuSe.

ok, i have the same problem as mikeX
i tried installing libgnomeui-2.0 by :
urpmi libgnomeui
it spits out
The following packages contain libgnomeui: libgnomeui2_0 libgnomeui2_0-devel gnomeui2
Seems i have it already installed ?!?!
i suspect this problem is caused because i didnt install gnome (must do that in future) cause i only use KDE
i found a mdk RPM, but again, it list dependencies and one being libgnomeui
i'll try to find the RPM for [libgnomeui-2.0] on the 3rd CD
any input would be appreciated

i found a Mdk9.1 RPM on RPMfind for gmencoder
in trying to install it listed, i think 3, dependancies.
i searched for each rpm indepantly and installed them from there,
i guess that how it was done 'back in the day' before package managers become avilable.
thanx
