View Full Version : Besides TDK, Which "Name Brands" are NOT Riteks?

Learned Colleagues:
I'm constantly in a "can I get name brand DVD-Rs cheaper?" mode and have made some interesting observations...
1. Got "wood" since Sam's started carrying DVD-Rs, found out their "Verbatims" were Ritek G03s.
2. Saw a great deal at Best Buy on Fujis; they were Ritek G03s.
3. Bought some Memorex and guess what? Yup Ritek G03s.
Obviously, I've started buying Riteks directly now, but in my searches the only name brand that you can get any deals on that makes its own DVD-Rs is TDK. Is anyone else legit?

WEll its possible that's why there are deals on those name brand disks cause they're really so cheap :)
I got some Sony's that have a SONY media id, so I doubt they get them made from ritek...
but other than TDK, yea i guess that's it.

Apart from that, you have of course MAM-E (i.e. Mitsui Europe), Tayo Yuden (locally also sold as Fuji), Maxell. I have no idea if you can get any deals on those, as I am not US-based ...

I buy TDKs when I'm doing home movies and use Ritek's if I'm backing up movies. TDK has always been top not. Taio Yudens are very good as well. Here's a place that sells Ritek G03s right now w/ 10% off for .85 if you buy 200; otherwise I believe it was .87 each for a pack of 100. Good luck

Absolutetly positive, both ADVDInfo and DVDDecrypter report Ritek G03 for the batch of Verbatims I picked up at my local Sam's Club.

Your Verbatims, how are they labeled:
Just "Verbatim" or "Verbatim DataLifePlus"?
(All DataLifePlus media I have are Mitsubishi dyes; but some of the others were CMCs)

Memorex DVD+Rs are Ricoh. Wonder why they use a different company for -Rs.

Checked out 2 different sets of Verbatims I've got.
First set was purchased in jewel cases and says "DataLife Plus." The ADVDInfor says MCC 00RG200. This is not a typo, its MCC, not CMC, at least according to DVDDecrypter. I got these around 6 months ago.
Second set purchased at Sam's Club in a 25 disc spindle last month says "DataLife," no plus and is made up of Ritek G03s.
That's the story...

Thank you for the detailed information. I knew that they sold both CMC and MCC (Mitsubishi) product in apparently indistinguishable packaging (see this thread (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=51912)).
I personally prefer Riteks over CMC, so next time I'll buy DL instead of DLP :).

smiller you should be able to tell by the price, the CMCs always seem to be on special (too good to be true price) in spindles. Also, MCC are manufactured in Singapore, I *think* the CMCs are manufactured in Taiwan.
