I Capture ALOT of VIdeo. About 7 hours worth of my favorite shows per day. I capture with ATI AIW 9700 Pro using MMC 8.5. I cap directly to VCD format. I use TMPGenc 2.520:Mpeg Tools to cut out commercials. I have two raid0 (striped) partitions running win XP pro. Both partitions are NTFS and they seem to be very erratic with there performance.
Ex: Usually a one hour episode has 43 minutes after cutting out commercials. and usually have 5-6 segments. when putting these segments together they sometimes take as little as 40 seconds (about 7 mbps other times it takes over 2 minutes (about 1-2 mbps). This variation in performance could come after a fresh reboot. no other programs running, with or without network installed. I do not know what the problem is?
I recently installed Partition Magic and converted one of the raid sets to fat32. Now I get CONSISTENT 8-10 mbps. (or about 30 seconds).

I know NTFS has a lot of overhead, however is this normal? Does anybody else have this issue?

NTFS is definitely a lot slower than FAT32. There are some tweaks that may help you, I used Tweak-XP to activate them.

is the difference in speed really that much? i thought the only advantage of having fat32 these days was that linux can read it.

i'm beginningg to not regret my setup. i have a 10Gig ntfs HDD and a 60gig fat32 HDD. the 10 gig hold all windows file and program files, and the 60GIG holds the documents and settings folder (yes the windows one). that way i have security for the important stuff, and can access all my documents and mp3's etc from linux at the same time.

would there be a noticable difference if i change the 10gig to fat 32?? i'm running at 800mhz so speed is kinda deteriorating.
