very slow ripping

Hi,

I'm having a very strange problem. I used to able to rip at 8x in iso mode and up to 17+ x in file mode. Now, all over a sudden it rips at a maximum of 2x in either mode. I am using decrypter and it has worked fine for a the past 6 months or so. Another strange thing I am seeing is that my cpu usage (I have the hyperthreading cpu, so it is a little harder to make sense of the usage graph) is at 50%, which I assume corresponds to 100% on a non-hyper threading cpu. What is stranger is that in my processes tab the dectypter doesn't utilise more than a few percent of my cpu, never more than 10 or so. The instance i give up ripping at this grueling rate, the cpu usage drops to 0.

Any suggestions? This is serioiusly slowing down my backup progress.

That will be kernel time then which means its down to your drivers.
Do you have DMA enabled on ALL of your drives? (i.e. dvdrom and hdds)

Where is the buffer bar when reading? on 0% ?

After I read up on the problem a little and looked closer at my IDE channels in Device Menager, I noticed that my dvd-rom drive was set to PIO mode. Apparently it generated 6 or more errors during the brute force rip so Windows automatically reset it to pio mode. It took me having to uninstall the IDE channel to which the device is connected as well as the device itself and a reboot for things to be back to normal. In case you have Windows XP and you DVD drive all over a sudden drops its transfer rate, that's how you fix it.

Is this possible? What dvd-rom are you getting this speed with? What ripper are you using?

you do not need to get that drastic, simply go into the device manager and delete primary and secondary ide and reboot. when it finds them again it will rewrite the registry settings of errors encountered back to default of (0). There is also a regedit you could do too.

As of my DVD-ROM, I'm using Sony DDU1611. The rip speed I got maximum was 17.4x (not continouosly, of course) when ripping to a SATA WD raptor HDD (10k rpm).

I did not think 17x was even possible. I thought 16x was fastest you could buy and that ripping anything over 12x was not even possible. I get 12x on dvd5 and thought that was great using my dvr-a05

This DVD ROM is a 16x drive. It averages above 12x in file mode when ripping a DVD-5, but it sure did max out at 17.4x for a little while during the ripping process.

I'm getting one of those. What firmware do you use? What speeds does it get with DVD9s?

It is whatever the latest region free firmware is. I am not at home right now, so I can't verify this. With DVD-9s it is slower, but by how much I dunno, I tend to remember the extremes only :)

Edit the reg file, deleting the IDE in Hardware-properties...
Still no faster then 2x ripping :confused:
DMA is set to Ultra (whatever), not PIO.

I've got a Plextor 708A as DVD-Rom, it's the secondary master,
HD is primary master.
I'm using DVD-Decrypter 3.1.9.0 and ASPI is 4.71.2
Is the Plextor also limited to 2x?
Can I increase this speed?

Yes it is limited to 2x.

To make it read faster, press and hold the eject button until the light flashes and the tray ejects.
The next disc you insert will read at full speed.

You will need to do this for each disc you want to read quickly because when you reboot / eject the disc, the drive goes back to 2x mode.

It doesn't seem to work, I've installed the 1.04 firmware update yesterday. I hope that's not the problem.
If so, is there a way to undo this or an other solution?

Yes, it's limited to 2x too.

over at www.rpc1.org you can find a hacked firmware that removes this limit

Is it only me that has troubles with all these speed/region removal firmwares.

When backing up PS2 games, I always used to copy them twice with different drives, generate and compare CRCs for them, so I'd know the image was correct, and then write. Overkill I know.

Since flashing my Toshiba 1612, the images it ripped no longer matched that of my other drive. Also, when backing up a dvd, when briefly casting an eye over the ISO, I spotted a couple of glitches in the film.

Now I have to run CDBremse and limit the drive to 4x ripping to ensure an accurate result. I believe this is a common problem, and one which I think gets palmed off to transcoder/burning programs as issues for them to address.
