I'm confused by some results I got this past weekend with my DUPEZ 4X dvd-r media. I picked up a 50 pack from rima.com

Anyway, they burn fine at 4x on my NEC 1300A with the latest standard firmware (107).

But, when I use them on my new Sharp DVD Recorder, they dont' burn well at all. I get various errors and can only read them back at 1x speeds if I'm lucky. The thing is, the Sharp burns at 1X !! I assumed 1X was the most basic standard and all media should burn fine at it if they can handle 4X in a 4x burner????

I suppose there's still a lot I don't know about DVD-R media..if anyone can shed light on this, please feel free to post.

I assumed 1X was the most basic standard and all media should burn fine at it if they can handle 4X in a 4x burner???? Theoretically: yes:

Let me give you an illustration with CD-R media, namely Verbatim 48x DLP (writer: Plextor Premium):

52x (http://www-user.tu-chemnitz.de/~noe/PlexTools_Prof_Scans/Mitsubishi/CD-R_48x/Burn_PP_52x/Cx_gr.gif)
4x (http://www-user.tu-chemnitz.de/~noe/PlexTools_Prof_Scans/Mitsubishi/CD-R_48x/Burn_PP_4x/Cx_gr.gif)

Now Maxell 2x DVD-R media in my A03:
1x (http://www-user.tu-chemnitz.de/~noe/CDF/KProbe_Scans/DVD_Brennquali/Maxell/Maxell_1x.gif)
2x (http://www-user.tu-chemnitz.de/~noe/CDF/KProbe_Scans/DVD_Brennquali/Maxell/Maxell_2x.gif)

If your Sharp dvd-r recorder is not optimized for the media you are trying to use, then it won't work anyway.

hmmm, well i remember for my A03 that it needed new firmware so it was "optimized" to burn 2X media. but I thought the general understanding was that 1x burning didn't need any special optimization for different brands :(

i wonder if the sharp recorder is defective or something. i'm going to try it with some riteks..i only have ritek g04's.

1x burning didn't need any special optimization for different brandsIf the discs follow the specs, then it *can* work without. If they don't, what the majority of the discs do, forget that idea...

hi alex,

yea i think you're right. so from what i can see, leaddata disks SUCK big time.
i just put in a Ritek G04 in my sharp recorder, and guess what? it burned it 1x just fine!! So it isn't my Sharp recorder, its the stupid leaddata disk. ah well...that's what I get for trying a cheaper brand.
