CCE BASIC loss of sharpness

Anyone know what "Quality settings to use" I noticed a significant blur when re-encoding a DVD MPEG2 progressive source. " e.g. "DAREDEVIL". If I check the quality filter on and select natural picture, basicly the default setting, it knocks down the sharpness significantly. If I un-check the quality filter it appears to produce a higher quality re-encoded video. At least it is a noticably sharper image, but the file size jumps up about 10meg. There are other choices " computer graphics & animation", Anybody know what settings are best to simply reduce the bitrate on a quality source. It appears that without the cce quality filter, the video looks better, so whats the function of the so called quality filter?

The filters do seem to soften the image to varying degrees from what I can tell. If you're encoding at low bitrates, under 3000 or so, I would turn them on as the softening effect reduces compression blocks. I would definitely turn them on for under 2300. The manual recommends something similar.

Assuming the use of avisynth, I would not advise using the internal filters. They are a bit on the brutal side, although *very* light use of the low pass can occassionally be useful. Avisynth has many more evolved and less destructive filters available.

I find using Natural Picture on the Simple setting works great on files with a 2300kbps or less average bitrate. Daredevil seemed to come out a little soft on my encode also. Probably something with the movie itself.
