How to get 720x480 in Divx 5.1???

I would like to get my ntsc films to encode at 720 x 480. But the highest I can go in Gknot is 704x368 it seems. But when I go into the divx settings and set up pass1 and nth pass...I choose "Home Theatre" profile and it then asks me to enter the desired resolution and fps...so I enter 720x480 at 30fps. But when the movie is finished encoding it only ends up at 704x288. What's the purpose of this "Home Theatre" option then to enter the resolution manually?

Lets start with your first question, how to run Gknot to produce AVIs from DVDs without resizing.

Be aware that DVD's do not have square pixels. All NTSC DVDs have a resolution of 720x480, and then a Display Aspect Ratio (DAR) of either 4:3 or 16:9. AVI videos have square pixels. If you encode unresized video from a DVD, you must use a player that can be set to resize on playback to either 4:3 or 16:9, such as ZoomPlayer or BSPlayer.

There are two methods: Edit the .avs script(s) prior to starting all jobs, and either delete or comment out the resizing filter.

Check the "Display AR" setting under the Input Pixel Aspect Ratio on the Resolution tab and set the value to 1.5 (which is 1.5:1, or 720x480). Set the W-Modulo from the default of 32 to 16, and select 720 as the width. You should see the Height automatically shift to 480. The resulting resize filter in the .avs script(s) will not have any effect.

Your second question is about DivX profiles. The DivX profiles, including Home Theater, are for standalone hardware devices (such as set-top DVD players that are "DivX Certified") and limit DivX options to the capabilities of that type of hardware. Some profiles exist now for future products that are not yet being marketed, or are expected to be in development soon.

For PCs, clear all profiles, enabling the use of all DivX options.
