CanopusADVC100 capture/codec questions

Just got my Canopus ADVC100 this week and after a few hours, finally got some stable captures from it. After a couple of minutes, capture would stop/freeze using multiple capture apps. Spent a few hours troubleshooting, and finally seemed to cure the problem by swapping PCI slots with my BT8*8 capture card with my firewire card.

System Specs:
XP1800
512MB DDR
KT266A mobo with Highpoint RAID controller
1 40 WD drive for O/s (XPPro SP1)
2 80 WD SE 8 MB cache as RAID 0 (capture drive)
Using ScenalyzerLive, my hard drive write tests are as follows:
286.8 fps... 9.6 times realtime.
Toshiba SDR5002 DVD-R
LiteOn LTd163 DVD Rom
Matrox G450 Dual monitor
SBLive 5.1
Realtek Nic
NEC 3 port Firewire card (Canopus connected through this)
BT 8*8 analog capture card

I have a couple issues I need help with.
First DV capture is all new to me. I have spent the last several years capturing with the BT card, so old habits are hard to break.
It looks like I will be doing my capture from the Canopus ADVC100 with Premiere 6. I have several other video apps installed that have installed DV codecs. When I capture with Premiere, I do not see an option to choose a codec. VirtualDub file information
shows Panasonic DV codec as the codec being used. How do I choose a specific codec, like Canopus Procoder DV codec?

Secondly, I capture from DirecTV via SVideo in. I am getting lines that look like interlaced video:

When the video is viewed in BSPlayer or VirtualDub, the lines are present, but do not seem as noticable in WinDVD.
what exactly is the cause of the lines/banding?
The lines were present when I captured with my BT card, but I always assumed it was from the fact that I was pushing the card to the limits of it's abilities. I would always run a deinterlace filter, but this naturally blurs the image.
Is there a fix to remove the lines during/after capture? or are these normal when capturing from satellite?

And third, certain types of type2 DV codecs can not be opened by VirtualDub. I get an error message ..... DVSD not compatible....
What DV codec yields the best quality, but can still be used in VirtualDub?

What lines? Your shots look like interlaced source.

Best codec? Canopus is not that great. Best is a subjective term. Most people here use an abandoned Panasonic codec or pirate versions of other codecs, frequently quite old. I registered the MainConcept codec and am very happy with it.

Capturing with your ADVC100, is not capturing in the sense that you are used to, as the unit uses hardware compression, so think of it as simply a file transfer via your Firewire port.

Premiere gives the captured avi file the FourCC 'dvsd', so whatever codec is registered to handle 'dvsd' files will be used to decode it. At the moment it appears to be the Panasonic DV codec. If you want to use the Canopus DV decoder then you need to change the FourCC code to 'cdvc'.

Looks like interlace artifacts. Read the Postprocessing section of the Capture guide for how and when to deinterlace or IVTC.

VirtualDub requires a VFW (video for windows) codec... there is a sticky thread above called "DV decoder differences", read that and decide for yourself which one is best for *your* needs.
