I'm parsing IFO's with code and am wondering about maximums:

- max cells in a PGC?
- max cells in a chapter?
- max chapters in a PGC?
- max PGCs in an IFO?

I don't mean the total number in a particular IFO, I mean the maximum possible value allowed by the specifications.

Well according to my book, DVD Authoring & production by Ralph LaBarge, it states...

A program is a collection of up to 255 cells.
A program chain (PGC) is a collection of up to 99 programs.
A Title is a collection of up to 999 program chains.
A Video Title Set(VTS) is a collection of up to 99 Titles * Edited
The Video Manager (VMG) is a collection of up to 99 Video Title Sets

That's as much I can give you.

I think there's a typo, a VTS can have up to 99 titles.
Other maximums
32767 PGC's per VTS.
999 chapters per title.

As for some of the maxes you asked about:
There is no maximum number of cells per chapter. A chapter may span PGCs, therefore may use all the cells of the title.

Maximum chapters per PGC - this is limited by the maximum programs per PGC (99), since that is the point of reference for the PTT (chapter) table.

Maximum PGCs per ifo - 32767 in the title domain (does not exist in VIDEO_TS.IFO, but it does have the first_play PGC), another 32767 in the menu domain.

Hi, mpucoder,

are you sure about 32767 PGC's per VTS?
I mean, 999 PGCs per Title and 99 Titles per VTS,
this would be 98901 PGCs per VTS. Does it have
something to do with this max. 32767 PGCs per ifo,
which is new to me?

There are many more restrictive maximums than the product of two other maxes. Take the number of cells, 255 per PGC, 999 PGCs per title, 99 titles per vts, would give you 25219755 cells. But the VobID/CellID numbering system wouldn't permit that many cells.

The PGC limit is due to SPRM 6 (TT_PGCN - current PGC number), SPRM 10 (NV_PGCN - nav timer PGC number), and all the commands that reference PGCs by number being restricted to a 15-bit number (somebody on the commitee must not have been aware of 16-bit unsigned integers, maybe got burned as a kid using Basic 7.0).
But the max applies to each domain (title and menu) seperately.

Thanks for the explanation.
Actually, it was a stupid question, I should have figured it out by
myself. But anyway, itīs more than enuogh PGCs, even for the longest
adventure game I could think of.
