HELP ME, VCD`s ARE REALLY GETTING ME DOWN :-(

I Have several film files, avi mainly.
they range from 697 meg to 720 meg.

I Have 800 meg cd`s and have set Nero to Overburn and set the mins to 101 and 59 seconds.

Now, nero encodes the avi file, says do i want to use overburn, it then states the required disc space required is 874 meg, when the original file is 697 meg ?????????

out of curiosity i said go anyway, it started burning, got to 30% then bombed out, saying unable to write disc at once or similair to that.

i then checked my cd, it had 0.99 gig of data, so i ran the cd in my dvd player and it worked, upto about 30 mins into the film and just stopped, i take it this is where it bombed out.

SO, WTF is going on, do vcd`s require an extra 100+meg to make the cd ?????

If so, how do i span the file so i can fit it onto 2 cd`s

The size of the AVI file have nothing to do with how big the VCD becomes. VCD uses constant bitrate of ~1500kbit/s where AVIs can have anything from 300 to 10000 depending on how you encode it. How long is your movie? Use DVD2(S)VCD for the conversion. It is a much better solution, and if you are willing to get TMPEG (or CCE) you'll get better quality than with Nero. Read the forum rules (http://forum.doom9.org/forum-rules.htm). Titles in all CAPS and special characters are prohibited (rule #9). Also rule #6 may be of interest depending on how you acquired your AVI's, and rule #1, as everything you ask about can be found at Doom9's homepage (http://www.doom9.org) in the guide section.

Are you saying that the 720 meg file which is 1 hr 40 mins long should be the size of 874 meg on cd ???

Iv`e found a bit of kit to split the files o thats not a prob any more, its just annoying that the 720 meg file wouldnt fit onto the 800 meg cd, so i take it the 1 hr 40 mins is the prob, if it was, 1 hr it would fit ?

Rig, you are apparently not burning a Data CD containing an .avi file, you are burning a Video CD. These are very different things.

The VCD standard uses MPEG-1 at 1150 kb/s, either 352x288 in PAL, or 352x240 NTSC. The audio is 224kb/s MP2. So asking Nero to create a VCD will have it transcode the video and audio from whatever format it is in now in your AVI, into these formats. So the size of your current .avi file has no bearing on whether it will fit on a CD, since both the audio and video will be transcoded, and the video will likely be resized.

In addition, unlike a data CD, Video CDs include their own error protection schemes, and can therefore fit more bits on a CD than a data CD. When you burn a data CD, error protection is included by the CD file system.

One nice thing about the VCD standard -- because it has fixed bitrates, and runs at 1X speed during playback -- an 80 minute CD will hold 80 minutes of audio and video, a 70 minute CDC will hold 70 minutes worth, etc. So your 100 minutes of video will only fit on a 100min sized CD, unless you split the AVI and burn two discs.
