View Full Version : Question on QUALITY

OK, so I've been using DVDShrink and DVDToolbox only to get CRAP quality. The sound goes out of sync at times, there are blocks of pixels. Its hard to fully enjoy a movie when I'm distracted by these nuances. So I've been told I'm probably trying to encode too much material.
Now, my hard drive is 20GB and that won't cut it for splitting DVDs.
I plan on getting a bigger hard drive, but before that can someone help me:
-If I snag bits and pieces of a movie w/ IfoEdit, will the quality be DVD-worthy (NO BLOCKS!)? Or am I resigned to copying the movie and just splitting it on two DVDs?
-And after I get Scenarist, will the full backup be DVD perfect as well?
-Does ALL encoding lose a fraction of the quality???
thanks
John

Yes, re-encoding is like copying a cassette - it can be so good you really have difficulty telling, or it can be useless.
You wont get better than the original! You can get close.

The sound goes out of sync at times, there are blocks of pixelsis a strong indicator of playback problems. DVDToolbox splits a movie losslessly, therefore your output should be exactly the same as the original. If it's not, most likely your player cannot properly read your discs. Are you using major brand discs?

I'm using FujiFilm. I assumed Fuji was of good quality.

Am I wrong in thinking that the originator of this thread has no desire to try DoItFast4U? I mean he posts about quality but then doesn't mention the tool that would fix his problem (a small mention of Scenarist, topped with some butchering using ifoedit != DoItFast4U)! And to top it off, he's posting in the DoItFast4U forum... I just don't get it.

I will try your program, but the remarks really aren't necesarry. If I knew THAT much, I wouldn't be posting a question on the forum now would I?

Well, I don't really see the point in flaming the author of the best DVD backup solution on the net, but that is all on you. There are other forums for the one-click dvd backup solutions so if that is what you are into, I would check there.
Now if you are into making perfect quality, near lossless backups you are in the right place. Read the guides and if there are points you don't understand there are many of us here who would be willing to help you out.

I thought his question more or less was "Do I get better quality with the big three?" Stat using one button programs.
The answer should be yes. Read the guids, learn and try it.

I don't wanna play the wiseguy here, but eyes is only author of a part of the best backup solution. We must give bbwoof and aqua some credit here too ofcourse :sly:
But one things for sure, flaming any one of them won't get you very far as far as getting help. No need for insulting people who are basically trying to help. Adapt (to the stile of answering) or die applies here too.
But referring to you question on quality: I think this is so hard to judge since quality is so subjective. Yes I find my backups created with the big free of very high quality and much ebtter then with any of the one click solution programs. But there are also others that will say that those programs are just as good (don't know where they get that idea hehe). But anyway, there's only one way to find out: TRY IT YOURSELF.
If you're going to split the dvd and thus leave everything intact and no reencoding the quality should remain the same. If you experience any playback problems then like blocking it's just as Doom9 stated either your player or the medium. Try the disc on an other player just to be sure.
