XviD Status?

Hi,

I wanted to post this thread to find out whether the XviD codec is still in development?

I have been to sourceforge and there is 0% activity on the XviD Project. I ask because I would like to know whether it is advisable to back up my dvd collections using XviD. I find XviD to give better quality overall, but do not want to encode the files only to find that in a year or so the XviD codec will be obselite?

I hope that none of this comes over as "pushy", but I, along with many others im sure would be very sad to see the end of the XviD codec, however, I completely understand if the people who are developing it have not got the time to continue with the project.

Yes, the xvid codec is still in development. The sourceforge project activity really isn't relevant. You can always check out www.xvid.org for more info. The reason for the lack of builds or new features lately is mainly because the team is focusing on bugfixing and building towards a 1.0 release of xvid. And even if xvid wasn't in development, why would it suddenly become obsolete in a year? Some reading on the xvid website would probably be beneficial - might start learning some things, differences between dev-api-3 and 4, etc., etc. Oh and btw there's lots of info on this here in the forum if you do a search. hth,

XviD on sourceforge? We are not on sourceforge... If there is an "xvid" project out there, it's not THE xvid ;)

If we had a development counter like sf's one, we would be in top-ten currently - development has been pretty heavy recently :)

Thats brilliant to hear, thanks for your replies!

By "obselite" I just meant with new hardware developments, 64 bit processing and newer codecs being released by divX etc. that if XviD was not in development it may not have kept up with new technologies, or have been left behind, meaning nobody would have the codecs installed on their system.

But Im very glad to hear that this isnt the case, and will definately do a bit more reading on the XviD development.

Well - there sure is (http://sourceforge.net/projects/xvid/) an XviD project on SourceForge, presumably admin-ed by gruel and isibaar...

Make of that what you will... :)
