tremendous slow down encoding speed

Please anyone tell me the reason for tremendous slow down in encoding speed using the new divx 5.1.

Maybe you used the "slowest" setting, in stead of the standard setting?

I'm having slow encoding speeds too, even at Standard quality without psychovisual, on my P4 3.06GHz system, roughly 20-35% slower than I was getting with DivX 5.05.

“The Slowest” setting isn’t the case.
As a matter of fact, even setting the fastest doesn’t help much.
I use P4 2.4G system and vdud to encode (no filter, no deinterlance)
Profile mode is disabled and use non of the mpeg4 tools.
Feedback window is disabled as well.
Do multipass encoding and use MV file.
Just like JohnMK said, roughly 20-35% slow down as compared to 5.0.5
Am I forgetting anything here?

I think there my be underlying changes to DivX that make it slower no matter what.

I quite agree. The quality at least doesn't seem worse. I trust that the slower encode speed results from better encoding.

i hope so. i'm using 'slowest' and get enormous 4 fps on my p4 2.8. thats 8.5 hours for the first pass of a 82 minutes movie...

Just set it to standard and stop complaining. The quality will be the same as what you're used to from earlier versions; the slower modes are there only for those people who care foremost about quality and who don't compain about it.

One reason for painfully slow encoding with Divx using slowest mode, is apparently because each frame is being encoded as an I,P, and B frame. The codec then decides which to use for best quality within bitrate constraints. I was a little shocked when I came across a graph that shows an average PSNR gain of .5 using slowest over standard encoder speed. I personally prefer to get quality gain using various tools written for .avs, but that's just me.

I'm wondering about the extreme slow down.

I had one thought... Maybe somebody over there did something foolish. When the feedback window is disabled is it *really* disabled or just made invisible???

If it's still calculating statistics, or worse, drawing frames in a background DC... that'd slow it down needlessly...

The feedback window is part of the encoding application (VDub) not the codec. So the creators of the codec have nothing to do with that.

I believe the slower and slowest modes simply calculate many more options in a 'full search' kinda way. That is always many times slower than the shortcuts other algorithms take. No matter how far you optimize them they'll always remain many times slower, unless you go through shortcuts again which brings you back down to the standard mode. So it's unrealistic to ever expect the slower and slowest modes to even approach standard mode in terms of speed.

I cannot believe this is true. I never saw the feedback window until I upgraded to DivX Pro 5.1 ... I did not upgrade VDub at the same time.

Do you have this confused with the VDub statistics window?

You know, the little window that annoyingly sets default focus on the 'abort' button, and then fails to ask if you really do want to abort the encode that's been running for the last 23 hours when you hit the space bar to 'wake up' your monitor :)

The 'new' feedback window in DivX 5.1.0 is certinly a nifty tool.

But, I can't help feeling that the encoding speeds have suffered since it's introduction. This was apparent even with the 'beta' codecs.

Sure it can be easily disabled in the 'settings'. But I would prefer an option for it to be totally removed. As even after being disabled I get the feeling that somethings still lurking in the background!

It could be just a coincidence ofcourse but with DivX 5.1.0 being as buggy as it is.... who knows!

Well, the first rip I ran with 5.1 and didn't know about the feedback window so it was enabled. It took all night 10:00pm - 5:00am to get to somwhere in the middle of pass 2 of a 6 pass rip...

With it disabled I got to somewhere in the middle of pass 5 today so it does help *some* :-)

With GMC, BiDi, QPel, Psy turned off and quality set to standard mode, the 5.1 is as fast as the 5.05. Just to proove that it doesnt have to be a lot slower than before.
