as cce was encoding it froze up. i tried to recover but cce would not start unless i disabled f-prot. is it safe to continue? i've used dvd2svcd many times with no problem recovering until now. i searched the forum and found nothing similar. i read the rules and hope this is ok.

The first thing I'd try is a clean install of all my ripping and encoding tools, this might keep you from running in circles. If the problem continues to present after this, there are countless threads on "CCE crash" that pertain to your problem, most notably in the CCE and DVD2SVCD Basic Topics forums. Define your problem as concisely as possible, enter this into a search, and .....stand back, you'll have much to read. Even when the title of a search return doesn't appear at first glance to reflect your problem, somewhere in that thread you'll find your keywords. If/when you get stuck, come on back for more explicit help. The search button is your best friend! Good luck!

Possibly OT but a clean install of your operating system and programs, followed by an image file that u can restore at any time is the best solution to avoid such problems in the future.
As for the rest I stick by ammck55's suggestions.

@oddyseus-Excellent advice. A clean install of my OS and ripping tools was the driving force behind learning to do my first drive re-format. The ability to accomplish this and do it quickly and effectively is a tremendous asset. It might not always be the optimum solution, but it will certainly take a lot of the lingering doubts and wildcards out of the equation, allowing you to look elsewhere for the problem if this doesn't solve it right off the bat.
