I have a mixed source video..., film in the beginning (which would be 23.976 ivtc.., then all interlace after that, which is 29.97. Now is there a way for the film part to play back progressive and still keep the interlace part at 29.97? Hope this makes sense..... Thanks.

In CCE's encode settings, check "3:2 pulldown detection". That should do it.

it plays back interlaced and really bad looking. so, the intro is telecined film, then interlace after that. It should work?

Yes, read the CCE manual on that. Requires CCE 2.66 or higher. Also make sure you uncheck "progressive frames" and set scanning order to "alternate" in Quality Settings.

So, is this supposed to encode at 29.97fps, and then perform inverse 3:2 pulldown when possible (the telecined film scene), and play the rest back in 29.97 interlace? I tried what you said, seems to be same thing... Manual doesn't give much detail about it........ Thanks a million.

AFAIK, yes. Note, you must not run pulldown against the .M2V file when "3:2 pulldown detection" is checked.
