Star Wars Alien Subtitles

Did a search for this and came up empty. Is there a tool out there that will do the Alien subtitles in the star wars movies properly? Tried DVDXCOPY Express and it simply deleted them. Haven't tried others, since I assume someone has done it with another tool and had it work.

Not too long ago, I used a combination of IFOedit and the beta for DVD Shrink for THE PHANTOM MENACE, and the result plays back sweetly! Here's how I did it:

Use IFOedit to create a "movie-only" version of film. If you're wanting the English version (for the trademark scroll that begins the film), select Angle 1 as the angle you want to keep. Keep only the second set of English Subtitles -- as this is the chain that contains your alien subs. Now, load your VTS_01_0.IFO file (the one IFOedit just created for you) into IFOedit.

*Even though this technique is explained elsewhere in the IFOedit forum, I'm not going to give you the typical, snotty, "Why don't you people read the !!*@&# forum before posting questions?!?!" garbage I keep seeing lately: We're here to HELP each other, people!*

Look at your top window while in IFOedit. Look for a section entitled VTS_PGCITI. Click on it, and a little + indicator should appear beside it. Click on the +, and you'll get a drop-down line which reads VTS_PGC_1. Click on that.

Now, look at your lower window in IFOedit. You'll see information that pertains to the movie files this IFO belongs to. Scroll down until you see a line that reads "There is no PGC Command Table." Right click on it. IFOedit will give you a menu, and on that menu is the option to "Add PreCommand." Click on it. Now, you'll see that your PGC has a precommand added to it that reads "NOP." Right click on it, and select "Edit Command."

Still with me? It's a lot of work, but we're almost there.

In the "Change Command" interface that pops up, click on the down arrow that's located beside the window that says "NOP." Select "[Set STN]Set Subpicture Stream Nr." Select "0" from the second drop-down menu that will appear. Click "OK." Click "Save," to hold your changes. Now, watch it in IFOedit's preview mode to check your work. If the subtitles don't appear (Chapter 14's a good test chapter, since Wotto speaks right off the bat), then repeat the steps given above, except this time around choose "1" instead of "0" when IFOedit gives you the drop-down menu regarding what subtitles you want to force.

Once the subs pop up on their own, go ahead and run your project through Shrink, and give it the good 'ol Deep Analysis! Shrink won't kill the work you just put into this project -- at least, it didn't for ME. Once done, YOU'RE done!

I don't have access to a copy of ATTACK OF THE CLONES right offhand, but I'd imagine that disk is authored pretty much the same as 'MENACE. Let me know if this helps! If you get stuck, I'll help you out.

*OH! And one more thing: Burn the first copy on a RW so you can test it on your standalone before committing your project to a coaster... er, I mean, Recordable.

I did it with IC7 and kept all english subtitles and final output worked just fine with alien subtitles and all. You cant deleted any english subtitle or it will screw playback up. Also I kept all angles just in case.

You sure about that? I only kept the second chain (these are the ones I forced with IFOedit) and my copy plays fine. Is your disk a region 1?

Did both Eps with DVD95Copy and the subs were perfect.

My Copy is R1, And maybe it's different with IC7 but when I deleted and kept only one set of english subs it didnt work. I redid the movie and kept all subs and it worked. I'm not saying your method is wrong, it makes sense, I was just stating the method I used.

There's more than one way to build a mousetrap, eh?

IC seems to be pretty good at keeping all your streams acurate to the originals... it's just been a good, long, time since I've used IC because of the undersizing issue.

When I used IFOedit to create a movie-only version, it surprised me to find that I had lost my forced subs (I had originally kept all subs, including Spanish). The method I described was the only way I could think of to fix it.

I will try the IFO edit method, since I want the movie only on my disc. I should get some time this weekend to do it so I will let you know.

You'll find that IFOedit 0.95 Angle keeping option is greyed out (disabled). So, you need to use v0.91 and you can find both of them here (http://www.ifoedit.com/).

I used .95 when I did my copy of MENACE. The usual dropdown list is greyed out at first, but -- once you're in VOB EXTRAS -- if you check off the option to remove angle pointers, the dropdown list becomes availible so that you can select which angle you want to keep. This only happens when dealing with multi-angle movies, naturally, but it is there.
