View Full Version : Cant Erase DVD RW

I am a new to the DVD authoring and have been doing some experimentation. With the help of a friend, we made a test using DVD Workshop onto DVD-RW and everything seemed OK. I have now attempted another project using DVD IT and wanted to burn it on to the same DVD disk. DVD IT did not give any indication that it recognized that there was data on the file disk as DVD Workshop had. It kept insisting that I needed to put a blank disk in my burner. I don't know if this is normal for the DVD IT program, DVD Workshop on the other hand recognized that there was data on the disk and offered to erase it.
I now find that every attempt to erase or reformat the DVD RW disk comes up with a message that the disk cannot be erased or formatted. I have attempted to do this using Easy-CD Creator 6.0 and also directly from My Computer on XP. But none of these efforts have been successful.
I wonder if anybody can direct me to where I went wrong and how I can get to reuse my RW disk. Thanks in advance.

More info
I took the disk back to my friend's place and he had no problem erasing the disk. His is a NEC burner installed in a Dell computer.
My burner is a Pioneer DVR-104. After that erase I still could not use the disk. DVD It says "Can't record on this type of disk". Primo DVD reports the disk as a stamped or locked DVD. Easy Cd 6 still says "install a blank disk" when I attempt to burn to it, but it will properly sense if I a use a blank CD or DVD-r.
My conclusion is that somehow the disk has been improperly coded. Is there a way to recover it?

Try erasing with DVD Decryptor.

I've also had a similar problem once, but then with DVD+RW. I had to choose 'full erase' i.s.o. 'quick erase' (as I use normally) to solve the problem. I don't know which 'erase' you used, but the full erase seems to be able to repair some problems.

I tried the Decrypter. When I tried an erase it responded "Cannot Erase Unkown/Unsupported Media"
Any other Thoughts?

I had the same problem on an A03 a while ago, with one of the first firmware. What is your firmware version ?

Would sure appreciate any help! As I said I'm a newby to DVD and before I start using the DVD Rs I'd like to be more certain about what I am doing.
In my experimenting the test file is only about 100mb so I tried burning it onto a normal CD. That would not play on my stand alone DVD nor in POwer DVD on my computer. On the computer, the "First play" screen cpomes up but quickly shuts down again.
Have you experienced compatablity problem with DVDit?

Hmmm not sure exactly how you managed to get a 'complete' disc on a dvd+rw. Nor do I know how / why your drive has gone into dvdrom mode when its current profile should be dvd+rw. That is what's messing things up.
I have a beta of DVD Decrypter that should be able to format this disc for you. Now, when the media detected (current profile) isnt cd-rw, dvd-rw or dvd+rw, the program prompts you as to which one of the three the disc is instead of just saying it cant format 'unsupported' media.
If you do Erase -> Full, it should work.

I have a Pioneer A-04 and had the same problem. I did however fix it.
Check your firmware. If you have updated to a hacked firmware that lets you burn discs at any speed, your RW's will never burn properly. You need to go back to a regular firmware that does not support this feature, or use the hack that let's you go right back to the hacked original firmware ver. 1.2. remember though you cannot use 4x discs with this or you may damage your burner.
If you are having the same problem as me, this will fix it.
Good luck!

hang on a minute.... you've got a Pioneer 104?
So why on earth are you playing with DVD+RW media?!
That drive cant write/erase DVD+RW. I think you might have switched discs with your friend without knowing!

I quess it is possible that we switched disks, but unfortunatly he just left for two weeks. I'll sure check it then.
As far as my firmware goes, it better not be a hacked version, I d/l it from Pioneer. It is version 1.20

Bibbo, can you please post the same chunk of info from the window on the right in ISO Write mode.
Halek2, version 1.20?! OMG!

Well I did d/l the 1.41 firmware. However it's info reads like the only effect is if you are attempting to use some of the newer high speed media. Mine is not of that vintage, i've had it about a year tho not hardly used. After reading all these responses, I feel I must have inadvertently switched disks with my friend.
Maybe since I have someone's attention, should I normally be able to write and read short DVD projects ( < 100m) to as Cd and be able to play them? I've tried but, cant get them to play in either a standalone (Panasonic DVD RV-32) or using PowerDVD on my computer.
The Panasonic reads it and recognizes it as a VCD, but then says cant play this type of disK. PowerDVD shows my "First Play" and then quits.
Thanks again!

Well it must be a media problem then. I know that the hacked firware makes the burner want to burn at 2x and it burns correctly at 1x but the erase is all messed up. Firware 1.2 is fine and should have no issues.
You other question is no. You can't write DVD projects to CD as most standalone boxes will see it as a CD/VCD type. I belive some players can use the mini-DVD project but I have not been successfull. Stick with SVCD for small projects like that.
Good luck.

Yeah, from 1.40 to 1.41 it might just be a speed fix, but it will have other things in it too. I seem to remember lots of revisions between my original version (probably 1.20 too) and my current 1.41

Its posible to "revive" them formating in another dvd recorder? (not sony). Or the best thing is to use the trash can?

It would seem that my problems were created by inadvertent switching of disks with my friend. I bought a new DVD-RW and it works fine. I have written 2 projects to it and both have worked as expected, tho the quality was disappointing.:)
