what is the best software player ( free download) to play back SVCD quality mpg files .

Media Player Classic 6.4.6.3 they say it can decode mpeg1/2 (i think that means play) and it's free.

yes,

Media Player Classic is a very good player but does not support non permanent, i think it named as Philips format, subtitles in SVCD format films :(

No software player supports selectable SVCD subs (CVD or Philips). There was a xine plugin in the making, but the developer hasn't been active for a while now.
If you don't like mpc, try sthsvcd (image quality is not too good, though).

You could try mplayer (www.mplayerhq.hu, you will have to compile it) and vlc (www.videolan.org, binaries available)

You are absolutely right!

Both mplayer and vlc are available for linux and windows. They produce excellent results with DVD, (S)VCD, avi, ogm... without resource consumption.

Unfortunately the web page of mplayer seems to be closed now.

actually there is a way to watch non-permanent (SVCD/CVD) subs in software players.
It's bit tricky but here comes.

1. Rip and encode movie normal way.
(if DVD2SVCD is used then click Don't make images)

2. Then rip subs again (eg SubRip) -> .srt

3. Cut and adjust subs for .mpegs

4. Author with VCDEasy (VCDImager or whatever you satisfied with) following way:

(if DVD2SVCD is used then there will be two files bbMPEG_Muxed_File00.mpg and 01.mpg and bbMPEG_Muxed_File-subbed00.mpg and 01.mpg... ...subbed00.mpg has muxed CVD/SVCD subs.

[ 1. Go to ISO-Files (in VCDEasy)

2. Put .srt subs to root named like this AVSEQ01.srt

3. Then click Go (of course put these .srt to cd2 also) ]

5. When bin/cued and the burning is ready. Setup Direct VobSub
Open DirectVobSub configure -> paths and add there *:\. (*=cd-drive)!


There you go.. ajs tried to add these subs with Win Iso. These bins didn't work after that!
