backing up Sex in the City freezes at video encode

Has anyone had problems with trying to back up Season 4 of Sex in the City? I, at first, ripped the first four episodes and then ran the batch. It got to CCE video encode, after the .vaf was made, and would stall right at the beginning of the video encode of the .mpv. I stopped it and it went to the next episode and the same thing happened. So, I just tried to rip and convert one episode at a time and the same thing happened. I was just wondering if anyone has had this problem with these DVDs? If not, then something is just wacky with the ones I have. Something didn't seem completely right with the ripping anyway because it takes an unusually long time just to rip the VOB files (using internal routines).

I've installed the latest DVD2SVCD, v1.2.1 build 2, and installed DiVx 5.1 and CCE still stalls at the start of encoding the mpv. It's a bit frustrating. Anyone else know if there is something special about these discs that would make it possible for this to happen?

As to your question I did notice on D3E1 of 6ftunder a problem with internal rip. It nearly seemed as if it had hung, but eventually continued when I stopped staring at it. I have since used DVDecrpter to create an ISO, and then mounted the ISO in Daemon tools and ripped from it as normal. Also, as to CCE hanging, you must provide the info needed. What happens when you play avs in vdub or mplayer2? Post the log.

The only reason I mentioned the DiVx was in another post, I believe the one concerning CCE crashes, someone mentioned that they installed DiVx and that seemed to fix their problem. I also didn't see what it had to do with it, but I figured I'd try it anyway.

Hmm, I edited my message last night to say that the avs plays in VDub (I'm guessing it's supposed to be sans audio) and which version of CCE I was using, 2.5, but now it's not there in the message. Very odd. Anyway, here's the DVD2SVCD log.

Please note you now have a new colorspace conversion selection in the bottom drop down of the advanced tab for each encoder. Always make sure this is set to Convert to YUY2 for CCE. A long time ago I did a post on how to change a registry setting so as to use DIVX as the color handler/convertor for YV12 to YUY. I wish I had not as converttoyuy2() is much faster.

For TMPG it depends on whether you have certain registry settings set to use Huffy as the handler. If not you would use Convert to RGB as the selection for TMPG. Use Convert to YUY for ProCorder.

I noticed you are using SemiAuto for your resizing. So I am assuming you are using Avisynth 2.5x and have done the fix I posted in the SemiAuto thread in the advanced section. This fix is for Avisynth versions dated August 20 and later. Since you said it previewed ok, I guess you must have done this or you are using a version of avisynth prior to Aug 20 which should be ok.

Just to be on the safe side, do a restart and use one of the original resizing scripts like Bilinear or Bicubic just so we can see if it still fails.

If it does, run cce manually and drag the avisynth script into it. Let me know if it freezes at that time. If not double click on the script line in cce and make sure audio is unchecked. Try to encode and let me know what happens.

I don't know if I am helping you as you said the other encode you tried worked so it may well just be something weirded out with the ripped vobs. You can always try dvd decrypter to rip that episode into your working dir and load the ifo into D2S.

Thanks for the suggestions. Will try all of those things and then reply back whether it works or not and what specifically did the trick when it does. I'm encoding another anime thing right now so it'll have to wait for another 4 hours or so before I can try this stuff.

Okay, here's how it's going down. The Bicubic resize didn't work either. Same thing, froze. I opened cce, put the script in and it failed because of the acmStreamConvert(), so I unchecked audio, like you said, and it started encoding. The odd thing is it's encoding very fast. It's estimated time is only 35mins for the mpv for a 30 min episode. What does this mean? Is it because when I dragged it in, it's only doing one pass or something? I'll wait til it finishes to see if I can view the mpv, which should only be another 25 mins or so. If I can view it, I'll let you know. I'll try DVD Decrypter afterwards, but please let me know what this could mean that the script seems to encode when dragged in, but not when put in via DVD2SVCD.

It obviously did not freeze when you dragged the avs onto CCE as you then said you could uncheck audio. Or, did you mean you dragged it into CCE and then tried to encode and then it froze so then you reloaded and unchecked audio before attempting to encode again? Preciseness is important :)

sorry I wasn't more precise. I made the assumption that since you suggested to uncheck the audio that you suspected that might happen. "...and everybody knows, when you make an assumption, you make an ass out of u and mption.";) It was an error that CCE threw out. Perhaps I gave the wrong impression by saying it froze. I meant stalled at the encoding process. The situation was the second one you said, "dragged it into CCE and then tried to encode and then it froze so then you reloaded and unchecked audio before attempting to encode again." The error said, when I hit the encode button, "acmStreamConvert() failed: At least one parameter is invalid (11)." Then I unchecked the audio in the script and it started to encode, albiet really fast. Right now, I'm trying to encode it again via DVD2SVCD using a rip of the first episode from DVD Decrypter. It's doing the vaf file now and will be done with that in a half hour. We'll see if it encodes the mpv. The actual rip via DVD Decrypter seemed at a more normal speed for the rip as opposed to the internal routines of DVD2SVCD which took an unusually long time for one 30 min episode. I think it took a half hour or more to rip using DVD2SVCD, but only took about 5 mins with DVD Decrypter so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

The encoding using the DVD Decrypter IFO had the same effect, CCE stalls when it starts to encode the mpv. The Elapsed Time doesn't even tick off. that's how I know it's not doing anything rather than just taking it's time.

Given that other dvds will rip and encode correctly I am out of suggestions for a while. I'll just throw out some spagetti in hope that something sticks..Assuming the script is as you posted above and has the resample audio in it (If you are older AMD), I don't understand why you are having a problem.

You say the script will play in media player, and VDub...I DO assume it will preview in the conversion tab OK ? ... Loadpluginex or Warpsharp is not in your avisynth plugin directory?? ... you have all title pictures and end of cd pics turned off?? In fact, select make no images for a test...All subs off.. Hell I don't know anything else at the moment.

Btw, for testing, select cbr or 1 pass vbr and just do a chapter. No need to go through VAF and all that till we understand what is happening.

Yeah, weird, isn't it? To answer your other questions: I'm not sure what you meant by "If you are older AMD". Yes, I have title pictures and end of CD pics turned off and I have it set to make no images anyway (takes up too much space and isn't necessary unless I'm posting something for others) and I have Rip subtitles unchecked. Right now I'm testing it with one pass VBR. There is only one chapter per episode so no need to choose a chapter. It's encoding the mpv in one pass VBR, but who knows what the size of it will turn out to be? Plus, the quality of it won't be as good.

DDog, The default for CCE is no color space conversion. Why do you suggest a conversion to YUY2? It does not seem any of the "normal" DVD2SVCD process would require any kind of color space conversion from that on the source.

@lordkinbote, I think I am getting frustrated :) Somehow we have got from CCE stalling to it working. That seems to have been skipped over. I assume you got a 800 meg file because you have 800 in the cd size in the bitrate tab. That is what it is supposed to do. Change it to 400 for that length range if you want it to be that size and check don't make image. You will have to use VCDEasy to put multiple episodes on one disk.

Also, my suggestion to use 1pass VBR on one chapter was just to save time to see if CCE would stall, not to do the full encode. 1pass vbr is complicated to use as there are now two methods of max bitrate calculation based upon what box is checked and it will not give you accurate file size prediction with either without using tylo's D2SRoBa plugin. I don't even want to go there now as that is a whole different subject.

Try CBR with no VAF and see if it CCE starts encoding. Assuming it does and assuming multipass does not, then I guess we have to look at the vaf creation of multipass as a potential culprit although that makes absolutely no sense to me.

@windtrader, all versions of CCE prior to 2.67 required a converttoyuy2() statement at the end of the script when using Avisyth 2.5x, AFAIK, CCE 2.67 will only work without the converttoyuy2() if something like ffvfw is installed to act as the color handler/converter. Without it, or a few other odd balls that might come with your vid card, or DIVX with a registry mod, it will not work. IMHO, I trust Sh0dan's work to be the most accurate and certainly the fastest, thus my feeling that the Convert To YUY should be used with all versions of CCE. Although I will say that ffVFW is about as fast and I would assume does a nice job of conversion also. Using DIVX, at least back when I tested it, was much slower, but as said, I tested that several version back. I am only assuming that is still correct information. So I always default to Sh0dan's conversion routines as a benchmark. If you know something different than me just let me know where I am in error. I ain't no brainchild, ya know, just another tool user like a monkey using a stick to eat ants :) (I'm going to ask RB to look at my reply to make sure I know what the heck I am talking about. If anybody will know for sure it ought to be him)

I'm really sorry, DDogg. I'm really not trying to confuse you. I keep thinking that I'm being clear. (I've never been told I don't give ENOUGH detail. Most people say I need to be more succint. :D ) I said that I tried the other things and they didn't work (the dragging into CCE, etc.) but the 1pass VBR did encode. You are correct that I forgot to change the bitrate to 400MB. I'll try again with CBR.

It did the full encode in 1pass VBR because I was doing something else at the same time and wasn't diligent with watching it so it finished. It answered my internal question of how it would turn out looking and what size it was anyway, so no big deal.

I'll get back to you in an hour to let you know how it went with the CBR.

Why is there no mpeg2source input, do you think? I just tried the new modified SemiAutoCropandResize filter, but I don't see anywhere in it that would affect the mpeg2source. Here's the whole log. Did you start from scratch for the cbr or do a restart? I had something similar happen to me after a ton of restarts not long ago. I never could pin it down to what caused it, and it has never happened since then.

I started from scratch. Right now, I'm trying multipass VBR using the D2SRoba plugin. I entered the CD size of 400MB and the CD # of 1 in it and it's encoding the mpv now. We'll see how it turns out. If it turns out okay, I'll just use the D2SRoba to do all the other episodes.

Yeah, DS2Roba didn't work either. Or it's quite possible I'm not using it correctly. It gets to a point in CCE where it stalls also. Exactly where, I don't know, but it stalls and then freezes DVD2SVCD. I think it's after it creates a vaf file because there's one in the video directory now. Here's the D2SRoba log:

I did a quick scan and found that ffVFW seems related to XVid, MPEG-4, and DivX stuff. Since I'm new to this all and using DVD2SVCD for DVD-DVD only compressions, it does not seem that the color space conversion is applicable. For those doing other types of conversions, it seems to have some use. Way beyond me though. :-)

UPDATE - curiosity kept me digging. DVD starts in YUV color space. The DVD2AVI step generated by DVD2SVCD maintains this with the CS=2 commandline parameter.

DVD2SVCD executes the following DVD2AVI. Commandline:
"C:\Program Files\DVD2SVCD\DVD2AVI\DVD2AVI.exe" -CS=2 -YR=1 -EXIT -
.....

The YUV video stream then passes to CCE and the default DVD2SVCD Encode tab setting is "no color space conversion", thus passing along the YUV stream.

AVISYNTH follows and y default does no YUY2 conversion, leaving the YUV alone.

So, I think for DVD-DVD it is best to leave CCE alone and default to no color space conversion. I have no idea what the effect is of forcing the YUY2 conversion in the CCE step.

DDogg, I forgot to tell you that when I did the CBR again, it worked. So, it would seem to be having a problem with the vaf when it does VBR. Although it creates it fine, there may be something wrong with the file it creates. But hey, I'm just spitballin' here. I'm just going on deduction not of any knowledge of the interworkings of the applications or the DVD disc itself.

The results of the CBR and the 1pass VBR mpegs are both bad. The CBR just looks horrible and the 1pass VBR doesn't play when burned to disc and put in the standalone. It's constantly pausing many times per second so it's useless.

Chalk it up to an oddball dvd or maybe even a bad one and don't look back as you are not having any trouble with others. It happens.

I suppose. Thanks for all your help, DDogg. If I do get it to work, I'll let you know. But, also if I do, it'll probably be out of sheer luck and I won't know what I did anyway so... windtrader, np, it is a very confusing area. Actually avisyth 2.5x and mpeg2dec3 were the next progression after the one you mentioned above. They allowed YV12 to be used throughout the entire process for Divx and such. Those guys really gained a lot. We still gained too because we could stay in YV12 throughout the entire process including the script actions like filters and resizing which made a big difference in speed. Now, only at the very end of the script do we have to convert so that CCE can get what it needs, thus the ConverttoYUY2() statement above in your example.

Starting with version 1.2.1 of dvd2svcd, it is now for the first time, optional via the new dropdown in the advanced tab because we found that CCE 2.67 would work with Avisynth 2.5x and Mpeg2dec3 without it IF certain software had been installed or certain registry tweaks had been done in conjuction with DIVX installation.

At least this is how I remember it all coming about. I was not expecting the new build to not have it selected as the default. IMHO, the Convert to YUY should still be used when using CCE as the fastest and best quality color conversion.

Hey, the easiest thing to do is try with and without it. If you notice a speed difference, go with the fastest method that works for you.

Right, also refer to the CCE FAQ (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=53770), Q14.4. CCE, any version, cannot natively decode YV12. It needs either YUY2 input or starting from CCE 2.67.00.10, an external codec that decodes the YV12 color format. I'd always go with AVISynth's internal ConvertToYUY2, especially as it has an optional parameter interlaced=TRUE/FALSE to appropriately treat interlaced material. DVD2SVCD sets this parameter to true if you select "Keep Interlaced" on the conversion tab.

After reading RB's various references (excellent), I figured out what is creating my confusion on the issue of YUY2 conversion in CCE.

DVD2DVD121b2 creates the AVISynth script containing "ConvertToYUY2()" with the default value of "no color conversion" or "Convert to YUY2" selected.

It seems DVD2DVD has a minor bug and should have the default value set to Convert to YUY2 and not create ConvertToYUY2()when "no color conversion" is selected.

Are you saying the convertoyuy2() is added if this is not selected in the drop down box??? I have never actually checked it as I always use the convert to yuy. Going to go check it.

Yep, it is an error. Now I see why we seemed to be speaking past each other last night! When no conversion is selected, the converttoyuy2() is still used. Oddly, when RGB is chosen, the standard AviSynth_Script_file.avs has the convertoyuy2() but the AviSynth_Script_file_FS1.AVS (used when frame selection is used has the RGB conversion. Ok, I'll get it reported and thanks for hanging in there :)

Yeah, it seems disc 1 is just wonky. I didn't have any problems encoding episode 1 of disc 2 using D2SRoba x-pass.
