Protect -O- Disc????

Recently i came across a dvd with a "special Label" on it. The disc was blade 2. I went about ripping it as normal using dvd shrink, but an error occured. I ejected the disc to make sure there were no scratches on it, and i noticed that there were two silver bars going across the top of the disc.
It was something labeled "protect-o-disc". What is This?:confused:
Apparently this is something preventing me from ripping the disc. If this is a newbie question, or it has been covers somewhere on another thread, please redirect me. If anyone knows what this is or how to "get around it" Please let me know.

Doesn't Blockbuster use this at some of their stores to protect discs from theft?

I dont know, but whatever it is....Its keeping me from ripping the disc.

Of course, they had to put in on across each other on the label side as to prevent off-balance playing. But IMO, the only reason for this is for theft prevention. 100% of the time it's on the inside of the case but on the disk? :confused: :confused:

I doubt the silver strips are preventing you from ripping the disk - unless (as 2COOL says) they put the disk out of balance.

Those strips are an anti-theft device, much like the metal-strip-in-self-stick-plastic things you sometimes find stuck to the inside of a shrink-wrapped keep case. A friend of mine gets CDs from the library, and they often have these silver strips. The library is smart and puts the strips near the hub, where they're less likely to put the disc out of balance.

The fact that you can't rip it is probably a coincidence. The root cause is probably something else - defective disk, zero-length VOB, etc.

In my experience, when I can't rip a DVD with one drive, I can often (about 60% of the time) rip it with another. Do you have access to another DVD drive?

You might also try ripping with different software (smart ripper or vStrip), though in my experience if DVDDecrypter won't rip it, nothing will.

Here's what you do: take a permanent marker (Sanford or whatever)and cover the silver bars. Seriously! Then try your rip.

When you are done, use a little rubbing alcohol on a hanky and remove the marking. This protection scheme has been around a while and I've heard that this procedure does the trick.

Uh... I think I had a similar situation: I figured that it's a bad thing to have the dvd unbalanced and nobody in their right mind would want what seemed like lead tape (you can use this to change how your golf club performs) on a dvd so I just removed the stickers and everything went smoothly.

I would go to the store or rental shop where you got this one, and ask them for a clean replacement saying that this stupid sticker prevents your player from playing the DVD.
I wouldn't try anything like permanent marker or so, since if it still doesn't work afterwards, you'll have more problems getting a replacement or refund (since it is quite likely one will notice you did something to the disc).
