VOB files , better to DIVX ( AVI ) or SVCD

I play back all compressed files via the computer

I have a series of 1 Gb VOB files that I am helping to compress using DVDX software

Which of the following do I get better picture quality

1) SVCD or
2) DIVX (AVI)


** ..which function will allow me to name the output file ?? where is that found ??

Only because you will be using your PC and PC monitor to play back video, I believe you may find DivX or any other MPEG-4 PC-based video system more apt to your needs. SVCD was designed for standalone (DVD player/SVCD player) playback, and has a fixed resolution format.

PC-based video systems, utilizing AVI or other container systems, will have more flexible resolutions, allowing you to remove all letter boxing from the video stream. In addition, you will be able to achieve higher bitrates than the SVCD standard.

That said ... the flexibility inherent in creating MPEG-4 video allows you to make mistakes, and you can certainly produce video too low or too high a resolution, or with insufficient bitrate. If you make these types of mistakes, you will usually end up with "poorer quality" results than any SVCD you would otherwise produce.

I use MPEG-4 (DivX, XviD) as well as MPEG-2 (SVCD) and MPEG-1 (VCD, XVCD), and I choose my encoding method based upon what I think will be the best possible playback for the finished environment. For example, I make SVCDs of home movies to share with my family on their SVCD capable players, make XVCDs for my own home theater (no SVCD capable player in the house), and make AVI files for laptop playback, which I sometimes also play through the laptopt's audio and video outputs on my home theater.

Here on Doom9's forum, we have communities that create SVCD and other variants, DVDs and miniDVDs, and MPEG-4 videos. These populations are not segregated by which may be better, rather, by what equipment is availalbe for storage and playback. Many of us use multiple formats, as well, because we have varying needs.

Lastly, I can't answer your DVDx question, as I haven't used the toolset. You might try looking through Doom9's step-by-step guides and using his recommendations for your first few encodes.

No matter, If I would be you, I would use DivX5 with GordianKnot...

If you follow the instuctions, you cannot do much wrong...

When you want to know how to encode (compress) your vob-files with DivX+GKnot, read the guides !!!

If want to encode to SVCD you can stay by DVDx...

And, yeah... The output file of DVDx can be choosen under File/Select destination !
