Why these blank 4.7gig disc show only 4.4 available. when put in a DVD recorder.

hi and welcome to the forum
this is caused by the discrepancy of 1000/1024 = 1
as you know 1024 bytes equal 1 kbyte equally 1024 kbyte are 1 meg etc...
now the manuafacturers frequently utilize this when selling hds and blank media, although this is not applicable to the full extent to normal cdr as they have a different 'history'.
anyway, a DVD contains 4 700 000 000 bytes, but only approx 4.4 Gigs. still the manufacturers of course prefer to write 4.7 instead of 4.4.

thanks you for the information. I do learn more every day, since i am new at this DVD stuff. So what you tell me is that there is no true 4.7gig blank disc. They are all 4.4 only. So I really have to reshrink my movies to fit 4.4 instead. Thanks
