My problem is, DVD Shrink will hang up in XP when I try to rip a DVD to the hard drive, but the same version Shrink will work using 98ME. I have a dual boot system with different hard drives for each OS, so the equipment is the same except for the OS. If I use ME to rip to the hard drive, then Shrink will work in XP with those ripped files that are on the hard drive. Any thoughts of what is going on? T. I. A.

Where is it hanging up? Right at the start of ripping?
I have a similar situation between my XP box and an old 98 box.
On the 98 box, I can start ripping a DVD using SmartRipper or DVDDecrypter as soon as I insert the DVD in the drive.
On the XP box, I can't rip till I authenticate the disk by playing it with WinDVD.
You may be experiencing something similar. Try authenticating the disk, then start DVDShrink.

This is the same computer, just using a dual boot system with different hard drives for ME and XP. Yes, I do have the aspi drivers, that are said to be the best ones, 4.60, and all four are the same version on both ME and XP. I have had this problem with all of the Shrink versions on XP. When I try to rip from the DVD, it knows the title, but just sets there, I can't even stop the program, I have to reboot to get out of it. Works just fine in ME. Works great in XP if I just use it on the files I have already ripped in ME. I must not be the only one with this problem, or am I?
Thanks for the help.

Ripping with DVD Decrypter, Smart Ripper, DVD X press, DVD2One, all work fine in ME and XP both. Using a Pioneer 104 drive, 1 gig of ddr 2100 memory, P4 2.66 gig cpu, in an asus P4B533E mobo. Thanks for the help, and let me know if you need any more info.

Have you tried authenticating the DVD? It really does sound similar. I used to get the same behavior from DVD2SVCD - if I ran it on my XP computer without authenticating the disk, it'd just hang when I clicked start.

Yes I did do the authenticating thing. I guess it's time to give up on Shrink in XP, and use ME to rip the DVD's. I do want to thank for the reply's on this however. Feel free to move this if you think it will help.

I have no problems whatsoever with Shrink3 or 2.3 on Windows XP Home Edition. I also have Nero and CloneCD on the system. No conflicts at all. I would guess there is another software on your system that is causing conflicts. I am assuming only Shrink freezes and that all your other software works fine? If you really want to use Shrink I would suggest reinstalling Windows XP, then install Shrink and see if it freezes. If it does not, then one of your other software is conflicting.
And just in case because you never know what can conflict, I would suggest running your antivirus program AND check for spyware/adware with Ad-Aware and SpyBot (both freeware).

I am using the same programs in ME as XP, Shrink will only work in ME from the DVD to hard drive. I am using XP Pro, not that this should make any difference. If I were to install XP again, then I would have to call Bill G. and go through hell to register it again, no thanks. I have also heard from others that have no problem in XP, my case must be kind of rare. But thanks for the ideas. I run Spyware often, and there is no problems there. I guess it could be Norton Firewall, Norton antivirus, or some other programs that somehow affect XP, but not ME. The worst thing is, I have to reboot XP, as there is just no way to end the Shrink program, just hangs forever.

Hi all. :)
riddler, if at all possible, I'd suggest you uninstall all the other DVD burning/backup softwares from your system, and disable any firewall/anti-virus services.
If DVD Shrink then works, re-install them one by one to try and identify the one causing the conflict. ;)
You could also check you have all the neccessary up-to-date files here:

I run XP Pro and have no problems with Shrink. I did change my file system from FAT32 to NTSF to allow for lager files. I would change to NTSF before you start uninstalling/reinstalling XP. Probably all you need to do. Might also look at Force ASPI (avail for download on this site)

Is it possible to change to NTSF without a reinstall?

I probably should have said that I am running NTFS on my XP drive, sorry about not being clear sooner. That is whats so strange, everyone said to never try to use 98x for ripping burning, but I have not had a problem with 98x, with any program. XP works great on everything except Shrink from disk to hard drive ripping. So when I want to use Shrink, I rip to disk using my fat32 ME drive, restart in XP to use those files with Shrink and finish the process. Since I have the same exact programs on both the hard drives, that is the puzzling part of all this. Thanks again for the help and suggestions on what to do.

PS, yes you can change the file system to NTFS from Fat32 without any problems.
