I mean, what's the whole point of striving for the best video quality, when you then have that garbage added in?

IMHO it's a useless feature which should be off by default. But I wanted to know what you video enthusiasts thought.

Sometimes a light grain effect can be asthetically pleasing, particularly at low bitrates where higher quantisers are used and blocks can develop a smoothed or plasticy appearance (it adds a little texture). The trick is to apply it to a level that suits your personal preference.

I don't use DivX's integrated option, but I like ffdshow's...

Why to "add this garbage in" ?

Simple answer... Just to re-produce the original picture... ;)

All processing steps (resizing n' encoding etc.) reducing the "original" film grain, that was already in the picture.
Its visible when you depend a original DVD frame with a encoded DivX one...

Also the author. from the Film to the DVD reduces the film grain a bit... Good to see when you watch the movie in the cinema and later on DVD !

And don't forget that lot PPL like to filter (denoise) their sources to gain compressability... ;)

So adding a small amout of noise, helps to reproduce the original film look !


My favorite ffdshow setting:

2CD encodes (Mplayer noise, Averanged, Uniform noise, Luminance noise 20, Chroma noise 10)
3CD encodes (Mplayer noise, Averanged, Uniform noise, Luminance noise 15, Chroma noise 5)

Its looks very nice to add the noise AFTER resizeing... :)
