any way to determine original film AR

Hi Everyone,

I wonder if is there a way to determine the original
aspect ratio of the encoded films (1.33, 1.85, 2.35,)
from vob files alone.

Or maybe the only solution to visually check the frames with dvd2avi
and try to calculate it by the known known DAR ( 16:9, 4:3) and measuring the black top/bottom borders.

Have a look at ReStream from Doom's download page. It's normally what I use. (newer version here. (http://shh.dvdboard.de/restream.html)

I think it would suit your needs.

I believe restream will just tell you if the movie is 4:3 or 16:9.

You can open a dvd2avi project file in gordian knot and use the (auto) crop feature and it will tell you the aspect ratio. I'm not sure it's entirely accurate (seemed to overstate by up to 0.1 on the 2 movies I tried, both of which are apparently 2.40:1).

Don't trust those aspect ratios you see on the back of DVD's, ( 1.33, 1.85, 2.35, ect.); they're not that accurate mathematically. You can check this yourself pretty easily, resize and crop a DVD source exactly using height mod 1 and width mod 1 and calculate width/height, you won't get a nice even decimal.
