Hi!

We are currently producing multillanguage Tutorial Screen Capture Videos for the open source CMS called Typo3.

The WMV Screen Capture Codec seems to compress the movies quite well(~18 kBit/s, with variable fps). But these files are not playable on Macs and Linux stations.

We dont want to exclude Linux and Mac users, so we just tested, how a true open source solution works, which led us to XVid and matroska. And I can say, that what xvid produces, using ~100kBit/s (constant quality 75%, ~5fps) is really impressive, thinking that this codec is actually written for organic footage and not for graphical stuff. And these files are multilang and can be played on any OS. Sounds quite well to me.

I tested a lot of the new features, that the unstable binaries offers, baut after reading the faqs etc. this is still very complex and new to me. I just wanted to ask, if someone has some tips, how I could optimize the settings, xvid offers, to produce good and compatible videos. (EG. can b-frames help in that case? Quarterpel?) Perhaps some modifications of the quantizer matrix. This can be compared to cartoon encoding at very low framerate. But the 'cartoon mode', which seems to have existed is not available anymore.

To answer one of your questions, b-frames indirectly gives better quality. They make the movie much more compressable, which in turn leaves a higher bitrate.

The guide being talked about here (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?threadid=56709) should answer all your questions. Granted this guide is made to be a step by step howto in gordianknot, he explains all xvid features in detail and should give you a better idea of what everything does.

Of course reading only goes so far, you'll want to try a bunch of test encodes with your newfound knowledge! :D

Also, don't make a mistake by comparing "compressability" of bframe encoder and non-bframe encoder. They are way too different.
Compressability is meaningless usually - but this time, it's completely and absolutely meaningless ;)
