View Full Version : Final image(VIDEO_TS) plays fine on WinDVD...not on TV-set

The conversion ended succsesfuly, tested with WinDVD5, was ok (video, audio sync,etc..) and burnt with DiscJuggler on TDK DVD+R 4x.
Problems:
-Pioneer 343 didn"t even start playing the DVD.
-On my 2nd DVD player BlueSky DVD plays ok but the subs are not readable cause are dislpayed at the bottom of the screen.
I authored a 2nd DVD ( DiskJuggler + TDK DVD+R 4x) with Ifoedit this time with the created files from DVD2SVCD. To my surprise plays fine on both DVD palyers (none of the above issues).
Is it Scenarist 2.6 that creates buggy images or missing something...?

I tried again with the latest 1.2.1B2a and the problem still exists. Is it the version of Scenarist that i use (2.6)?...anyone to confirm that Scenarist 2.6 works?

Same here plays fine on my computer but not on my standalone(pioneer 525)it gives subtitles almost out of the picture and a chunky audio picture is fine. But when i use another program like dvd shrink or dvd2dvd-r it works fine on my standalone so it must be scenarist causing the problem b.t.w. i have used version 2.6 and 2.7 both gave the same problem.

I also have a Pioneer 353 standalone player and I'm having really a bad time getting it to play burned DVDs. So far I've been able to get it to play 1 out of 6 DVD+RW discs I created. I cannot get it to play any DVD+R discs I've tried. It does play DVD-R discs seemingly OK. It doesn't seem to matter how I create the discs, I've used DVD2SVCD along with all three supported encoders, I've used TMPGEnc Plus and Procoder by themselves, I've changed the audio to AC3s, I've authored the discs with TMPGEnc DVD Author or with Nero 6... nothing seems to matter except the type of disc. Not sure why one of the DVD+RW discs work but none of the others do, and not sure why the DVD-R works and not the DVD+R. I'm using TDK branded media on a TDK 440n external firewire burner (multiformat model).
Even though my burner can handle anything, my standalone player seems to prefer DVD-R discs. I'm going to obtain some DVD-RW discs and see how they perform, hopefully it will like them as I'd rather not waste DVD-Rs.

No, the problem is not the DVD+Rs media i use. Read carefully my 1st post. It"s the authoring program (Scenarist 2.6)or the input project files comes from D2S...don"t know... When i author the same files with IfoEdit ( and using the same DVD media+DVD burnig application) everyting is OK....

I experienced the same with my Samsung DVD player, subtitles on top of the screen and scrambled. Playing the same disc on my PC with WinDVD or PowerDVD, no problems at all.
Done with D2S 1.2.1B2a with Scenarist 2.7 Pro on DVD-R without visible errors during the entire process.
So, I remade manually the DVD with Scenarist and the files available (redid subs with DIF4U), and all OK on PC and Samsung DVD player :) .
Any idea if this bug is confirmed yet?

So, seems that it"s the way the program exports the project files to Scenarist.
By the way, only 4-5 users report this "bug"...strange? or most of the them author the DVD"s manually with IfoEdit/Scenarist ?
Still waiting for @DVD2SVCD to check it out... :)

Well assuming D2S is going to get some time soon to check into this let's do some background tests for him. I'll throw out a few things. The only problem is I don't know much about dvd authoring so bear with me as I attempt to at least facilitate.
1> I noticed Fastolfe knew scenarist enough to manually use the files generated by d2s and they played when burned, but he said something about redoing the subs. Are the people having problems always using subs? Can somebody do a complete encode with just one ac3 audio and no subs and try?
2> Has anybody actually mounted the movie.dvd image in a virtual drive and done a disk copy?
3> Anybody that is reading that has no problems playing the burned image or files please post with details of player, media used burning method/software.
4> In general we need to figure out what it is for d2s as he might have time to fix it but I doubt right now he has the time to do all the background research. You guys should try to narrow it down to a few possibilities.

DDogg,
1- Hopefully to clarify a bit, my first go w/D2S 1.2.1B2a was w/o subs, simple execution since the subs take so much more time to process ;-) = 1 video stream + 2 ac3 streams. The conversion went smoothly, did burn on DVD-RW with Nero6 and played fine on PC and on standalone DVD player (video+audios+chap = OK). So, I went for the complete conversion with 3 subs this time. The entire process went smoothly again, did burn on the same DVD-RW with Nero6 and played fine on PC (video+audios+chap+subs = OK) and on standalone DVD player except for the three subs (video+audios+chap = OK but subs = NOK). With scenarist, I just did follow the guides available at Doom9 and I did import the created assets from D2S into scenarist. The subs (from D2S) being in a format that I cannot import into scenarist (my fault, do not know how), I did reprocess the subs from the DVD with DIF4U (it exports them into .sst). With all the files imported into scenarist, I just created a new DVD-Video.
Hope I did better this time describing what was OK and what was not.
2- Can (will) try this.
3- ...
4- Would gladly help.

Fastolfe, thanks, that clarified a lot.
Now we need VILLA21 and InF to try a "simple" encode with no subs and only one audio. If that burns and plays we then have it bracketed. Also, it might be a good idea to set max at 8500 instead of 9000 when you guys do try it.

I also tried to re-author the generated audio and video files with IfoEdit, same result.

3) Go to the “Encoder” tab and set “Multipass VBR” to 4 or 5 passes (obviously that’s up to you how many you decide, I choose 4)
Then click on the “Advanced settings” option (still in Encoder tab) bottom right corner and tick “Close all GOPs” and “DVD Compliant”
this guide helped me a lot, i admit it's pretty hard to find

xp_eric words suggested D2S advised this and my reply was to him although since it was off topic to some degree I should not have. I was not and still am not aware of that advice being given by d2s, but I may be mistaken (maybe happened while I was gone). I would suggest people do some searches and read the cce docs in your installation directory about this subject before blindly doing it. Closing all GOPs negatively effects quality and AFAIK you only need to do it if you are editing. Again, could be wrong on that so do some searches. If anybody finds any solid information please post as a new thread.
@InF, what bitrate did you use as max? It sounds as if your player is encountering too high a bitrate, but that is just a guess.

Well spotted Inf. Of course I do not have my first full D2S trial to check the original VTS_01_0.IFO but I just check my manually re-authored VTS_01_0.IFO with ifoedit and there it is set to PAL (which can explain why the re-authoring is OK for subs as well) as it should since I am doing also PAL movies.

What I don't get is D2S is in PAL land. Normally us ntsc guys occassionally get the problems. Maybe some players will play both and some not? Hmmm, that might make sense as I would think D2S has machines that would for testing. Maybe you guys could check between yourself and see if you are using same or similar machines? I'm looking for a common element beyond just PAL. If it were just that D2S would have caught it.

Thanks for the new beta.
Using it with 2 audio ac3 and 2 subs, still perfectly OK with PowerDVD. On my Samsung standalone, both audio streams are OK and OK with the first sub stream, unfortunatly, I cannot switch to the second sub.
Checking the VTS_01_0.IFO, the PAL flag is properly set in the VTSI_MAT:
[00000200] Video attributes of VTSTT_VOBS 24064 [5e00]
Video attribute details:
Video compression MPEG-2
TV system PAL 625/50
Aspect ratio 16:9
Automatic Display Mode letterboxed
CC for Line21-1 (NTSC only) no data
CC for Line21-2 (NTSC only) no data
Bit Rate VBR
Source Resolution 720x576 (PAL)
Letterboxed top&bottom cropped no
Mode Camera
Although, there is still one section flagged NTSC (do not know if this is important):
[00000100] Video attributes of VTSM_VOBS 0 [0000]
Video attribute details:
Video compression MPEG-1
TV system NTSC 525/60
Aspect ratio 4:3
Automatic Display Mode pan-scan & letterboxed
CC for Line21-1 (NTSC only) no data
CC for Line21-2 (NTSC only) no data
Bit Rate VBR
Source Resolution 720x480 (NTSC)
Letterboxed top&bottom cropped no
Mode Camera
which is flagged PAL/MPEG-2 in the original VTSI_MAT.
But in VTS_01_0.IFO, I get:
Title Set (Movie) attributes:
Video: MPEG-2 720x576 (PAL) (PAL 625/50) (16:9) (letterboxed)
Audio 1: Français (Dolby AC-3) 6ch 48Kbps DRC (ID: 0x80)
Audio 2: English (Dolby AC-3) 6ch 48Kbps DRC (ID: 0x81)
SubPicture 1: Français (2-bit rle ) (ID: 0x20)
SubPicture 2: English (2-bit rle ) (ID: 0x21,0x20)
with the SubPicture 2 gets 2 ID, is this normal?
The original VTS_01_0.IFO gives:
Title Set (Movie) attributes:
Video: MPEG-2 720x576 (PAL) (PAL 625/50) (16:9) (letterboxed)
Audio 1: English (Dolby AC-3) 6ch 48Kbps DRC (ID: 0x80)
Audio 2: Français (Dolby AC-3) 6ch 48Kbps DRC (ID: 0x81)
Audio 3: English (Dolby AC-3) 2ch 48Kbps DRC (ID: 0x82)
SubPicture 1: English (2-bit rle ) (ID: 0x20)
SubPicture 2: Français (2-bit rle ) (ID: 0x21)
SubPicture 3: Arabic (2-bit rle ) (ID: 0x22)
SubPicture 4: Hindi (2-bit rle ) (ID: 0x23)
SubPicture 5: Français (2-bit rle ) (ID: 0x24)
SubPicture 6: English (2-bit rle ) (ID: 0x25)
I choose when requested at the beginning of the conversion SubPicture 1 and 2 only.
What am i doing wrong? Is there a way to edit the SubPicture 2 to set the ID: 0x21 only, so that I can check if this is the problem?
Thanks,

That's something different I think.... Oh, I think I know what it is...Make sure converttoyuy is chosen in the dropdown under advanced in the encoder tab if using CCE. He fixed that and if it is not chosen it will throw that error. It should be the default, in fact it needs to be the default. If not you will have problems on some systems depending on whether you have ffVFW lite installed and what encoder is used. Do that and a restart and you should be ok to go.
Background:
Originally the Converttoyuy2() was always added to the bottom of your script. A few oddballs like me needed to have that as an option. When the new builds came out it was added but it was not honoring the choice and still always added the convertoyuy2() statement so nobody noticed. In this build it is actually fixed. As said, it needs to be defaulted on installation. If it is not it would cause this error when using CCE unless ffVFW lite is installed as a yv12>yuy2 color handler. The converttoyuy choice is the best and fastest choice for nearly everybody using CCE, except some with special oddball needs and usages.
For Tmpg and, I think, Procorder RGB is the best starting selection. It depends on what codecs and what registry settings are used. Specifically whether VIDC.YUY2=huffyuv.dll is set in registry drivers32 section.

Checking again when processing scenarist 'manually', just to add 2 comments:
- first, disregard my previous remark on [00000100] Video attributes of VTSM_VOBS 0 [0000] in the VTSI_MAT being flagged NTSC, it is just the same in the manual process, so this has no impact on how my standalone reads the DVD;
- and secondly, the second sub has one ID and it look like that
SubPicture 1: Français (2-bit rle ) (ID: 0x20)
SubPicture 2: English (2-bit rle ) (ID: 0x21)
so, for my 'not-so-flexible' standalone DVD player, this looks likely to be the problem.
Anybody observed the same problem when handling more than one sub (might be just me  and my stupid player).

Apparently, I find a way (thanks to 2COOL for his ifoedit guide) to make the second sub finally to work i.e. being able to switch from sub 1 to sub 2 and back (this applies only for PAL movies and some Standalone that stick strictly to DVD specs).
One thing though, all these ifo data go way above my head (I suppose I have some serious reading to do ;) ) but here it goes anyway:
- sub 1 with the latest beta 2 build, no problem to switch it on both on PC and on Standalone player, so that problem is fixed;
- sub 2 works fine on PC but with the Standalone you cannot get it on your TV screen because sub 1 stays on, you cannot switch subs. With IfoEdit, you will see in the VTS_01_0.IFO something like that:
-----------------------------
Title Set (Movie) attributes:
Video: MPEG-2 720x576 (PAL) (PAL 625/50) (16:9) (letterboxed)
Audio 1: Français (Dolby AC-3) 6ch 48Kbps DRC (ID: 0x80)
Audio 2: English (Dolby AC-3) 6ch 48Kbps DRC (ID: 0x81)
SubPicture 1: Français (2-bit rle ) (ID: 0x20)
SubPicture 2: English (2-bit rle ) (ID: 0x21,0x20)
-----------------------------
where subs 2 has 2 ID versus only one for sub 1.
Now, when you go in VTS_ITI and click on VTS_PGC_1, you get more details/infos on the Program Chain with the corresponding values:
-----------------------------
[0000001c] Sub-picture stream 1 status -2147483648 [80000000]
Sub-picture stream 1 uses stream nr.(4:3): 0
Sub-picture stream 1 uses stream nr.(wide): 0
Sub-picture stream 1 uses stream nr.(letterbox): 0
Sub-picture stream 1 uses stream nr.(pan&scan): 0
[00000020] Sub-picture stream 2 status -2147418112 [80010000]
Sub-picture stream 2 uses stream nr.(4:3): 0
Sub-picture stream 2 uses stream nr.(wide): 1
Sub-picture stream 2 uses stream nr.(letterbox): 0
Sub-picture stream 2 uses stream nr.(pan&scan): 0
-----------------------------
The problem is this value: -2147418112, click on it and enter the new value: -2147417856.
Go back in the VTS_01_0.IFO, and voilà, the second sub has one ID:
-----------------------------
Title Set (Movie) attributes:
Video: MPEG-2 720x576 (PAL) (PAL 625/50) (16:9) (letterboxed)
Audio 1: Français (Dolby AC-3) 6ch 48Kbps DRC (ID: 0x80)
Audio 2: English (Dolby AC-3) 6ch 48Kbps DRC (ID: 0x81)
SubPicture 1: Français (2-bit rle ) (ID: 0x20)
SubPicture 2: English (2-bit rle ) (ID: 0x21)
-----------------------------
Burn and play on your Standalone, and you can now switch back and forth between the 2 substreams (at least it works perfectly for me).
Now, I guess that the same type of modification would be required if a third sub would exist and so on (at least with this D2S beta).
Remember I said that these Ifo data go above my head, well, I have 'The Negociator' DVD which has multiple subs and guess what, the first sub has one ID like this (ID: 0x20) and yes the second has 2 ID (ID: 0x21,0x20) and works perfectly of course
 .
Hopefully DVD2SVCD will figure out how to solve this little remaining problem :) . in the meantime, maybe this workaround can help others out there in PAL-land.
