DVDDecrypter doesn't remove RCE protection?

Hello everyone,

I have run into a few problems with DVDDecrypter that I can't figure out. First, I had a problem with forced subtitles, but I was told by the author that it was because I had the setting "remove IFO/BUP PUOs" checked in the settings. I unchecked the setting and haven't gotten any forced subtitles since. :)

Now I ripped a few of the Simpsons Season 3 (R1) discs and I get the dreaded "This disc is not formatted to play in this region" error, indicating to me that the RCE protection has not been properly removed, even though I have RC and RCE removal checked in the settings. Normally I would just use IfoEdit to remove the RCE protection, but IfoEdit no longer sees any protection there, and as such can not remove it. Is there any way to manually remove the protection now?

Make sure you're using 3.1.6.0
Make sure you've configured the 'RCE Protection Region' setting correctly before you rip. Set it to what the disc is / should be. In your case, 1.

But my region was already set to "1", and I am using version 3.1.6.0, so I am still at a loss to explain the problem. I have since reripped the discs with RC and RCE protection removal options disabled and then removed the RCE protection with IfoEdit, and all now works just fine. I'm the same guy that had the problems with forced subtitles showing up when I had "remove PUOs" enabled, and disabling that setting fixed that problem. So now I am back to using DVDDecrypter with RC, RCE, and PUO options turned off, and then removing them with IfoEdit. I just figured that I should report these "bugs" in DVDDecrypter so that perhaps you could fix them in the next version.

To help me solve this, I'll need you to send me all of the IFO / BUP files from the ORIGINAL DVD. You'll need to copy them off the disc using explorer - and not a ripper.
Just zip them all up and email them to the address in the programs 'about' box.

I, for one, am curious on why DVD Decrypter consistently corrected certain, not all, PGC commands in this DVD, The Simpsons Season 3 Region 1. It's the same with SmartRipper. Either, the DVDs were badly authored or maybe they were extra hex values strategically placed? Just pushing out theories but let us know what you find out.

Ok, I've sent Explorer copies and the ripped versions of the IFOs and BUPs from one of the Simpsons discs. Please let us know what you find out (or let me know if you don't get the files for some reason).

Just another note:

The RCE protection resides in VIDEO_TS.IFO, and if you rip the disc without removing the RCE protection, then the "wrong region" error comes up right away. When I rip the disc with 3.1.6.0 using the RCE removal, the "wrong region" message comes in after the main menu, just when you try to play any episode. And like I said, IfoEdit removes the protection without a hitch. Maybe the protection needs to be removed after it is ripped, and not during the ripping process?

Maybe the protection needs to be removed after it is ripped, and not during the ripping process? We can only know after the rip. If that's the case, like these DVDs, it would be just a simple task to correct that. Read Step 6 (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&postid=365490#post365490) of this guide.

While it sometimes may be neccesary for 2 or more people to share files to solve a problem, this is best done in private. Once the problem has been solved, or identified, the results can be posted in a generic manner.

Hopefully my sending of the IFOs, in private, will not be considered a violation of rule #6, especially since the request came from one of the moderators. I have not and will not post any files that could possibly compromise the integrity of this site. If I am doing wrong here, please let me know and I will make sure not to let it happen again.

You're not doing anything wrong...

I think alot of RCE removal right now is based upon the detection of certain code in the ifos, if that code is substantially changed, or they start using different registers, perhaps RCE removal no longer works correctly.

Ok, it was actually some of my 'lets try and be clever' code that killed it. I'd already fixed it lastnight before receiving the ifo files. Just tested it and proved my theory correct. 3.1.7.0 will work fine.

You dont need to try it out, I've made my own little copy of the simpsons from the files I was sent.
Its not at all hard to patch RCE, just there was a flaw in my 'automatic RCE region detection' code that made the program patch the wrong region. Basically Ive removed that now and it patches to whatever you've set it to in the settings.

As for a release date, well it will be available when its ready :)
