I was very excited about the new DVD2SVCD DVD2DVD functionality. I think that's great, however, I tried it for the first time last night and everything went great until the program tried creating the scenarist dvd image file. It chugs a little bit and then fails. DVD2SVCD is directed to the right directoy but there appears to be a problem.

post your log and are you using 2.6 or 2.7?
maybe it's that you chose DTS..I'm guessing?

I was just posting part of the log when your replay came through. I posted just a snippet of my log above, but will post the whole thing now. I am using Scenarist 2.7

Thanks for your reply. I am not including the recovery attempts I made in this.

Always look in scenarist when/if this happens. Usually it'll tell you exactly what went wrong. Look in the tabs down left in scenarist.

zeus163

Thanks for your response, but the problem is, Scenarist never even opens. I've only used Scenarist a few times to author DVD's, so I'm not an expert using it. But Scenarist doesn't appear to create a log file for it--unless I'm looking in the wrong place for this. I just opened up Scenarist and had to create a dummy file to open it. I also tried opening up a script file in my projects folder, but the only .scp file I could find in my projects folder then wants a .scn file (I think). So, I'm a bit confused right now. I'm sure I'm doing something incredibly stupid.

Hmmm...maybe DVD2SVCD and Scenarist are not happy. When I try to browse for Scenarist in the drop down box for Scenarist in DVD2SVCD nothing happens.

I just tried right clicking and opening the .scp file with scenarist and it stated that it had been modified with a later version of scenarist! That is completely odd!

Make sure that scenarist isn't running when dvd2svcd tries to run it (to make sure press ctrl-alt-delete and select task manager, go to the proces tab and look for scenarist.exe). Also, try restarting dvd2svcd from dvd authoring. Are you using the professional version?

Why are you encoding audio to mp2? Were talking dvd to dvdr not svcd correct?

edit: took out dead link to scenarist muxing

Shouldn't matter. It's a method of making the video bitrate higher.

zeus163

Professional version? Of DVD2SVCD or Scenarist?

Scenarist is not running and I checked to see under processes. I've tried to restart dvd2svcd from that point, but still the same error.

Also, mrbass I saw that too, but I selected dvd to dvd in the miscellaneous options, so I thought I had done this right.

Unfortunately, I've got to head out for work, so I won't be able to test it until later.

dvd2svcd
29th August 2003, 17:26
Please verify in the CD-Image tab that dvd2svcd is in fact pointing to scenarist.exe

zeus163
29th August 2003, 17:36
That seems to be the problem. The drop down browser tab doesn't seem to work--nothing happens, so the only difference from the default I see is that my Scenarist.exe starts with a captial S as opposed to the defaulted lowercase scenarist.exe. I manually changed this.

Oh man, I've got to head out. I'll try again later. I appreciate the responses for this. I'd love to get this working as adding this functionality is great!

Maybe I just need to reinstall dvd2svcd and or Scenarist?

idbirch2
29th August 2003, 19:02
I'm having exactly the same problem - the location of Scenarist in the CD-Image tab is correct apart from it has a lower case S. I have already tried editting the location of Scenarist to a capital S but its still the same.

I'm using Scenarist Pro 2.7.0.0241 on XP Pro if it helps. And I wasn't using DTS, I selected DVD2DVD, Scenarist is not already running.

If you copy the path and filename from the CD-Image tab and into start/run, does it execute then ?

Edit: I think DDogg has figured it out. Remove all quotes in the scenarist.exe field.

OK, with the beta 2 now the scenarist open up.
But after 30% multiplexing of the VOB Main Stream (Generating DVD File 30%), scenarist breaks down and end without an error message!!

The only error message i got in the log was during the import,
"Error - Scene duration shall be more than 0.4 second" the rest was ok and the multiplexing start.

After fixing the Scenarist location problem, is there a way to restart at the Scenarist step or does one have to start from the beginning?

Thx Don

In the CDImage tab try changing to Fixed Chapters (just as a test).
Also try reducing the cdsize to 4400 in the bitrate tab.

I reran it from the top and got Scenarist going but it just stopped in Scenarist. End of log snippet follows:

The Scenarist window shows data editor tab, has pulldown_Encoded_Video-NT and Encoded_audio_1.ac3 objects in window to right and has two warning messages in the general tab; lower left corner

General
Warning 1: Quadrant or Siggma Design MPEG decoder is not present or the driver is not installed.
Warning 2: Hardware decoding of video may not work

Import tab shows finish importing after a fairly log log of info messages.

Track anbd Scenario editor appear to have the proper settings.

I've not run Scnearist on this system previously so it seems that I may be missing some components required by Scenarist (V2.7).

Is there a way to ignore the warning? I manually started Tools/Multiplex All. Will update if the output is correct.

UPDATE - did manual multiplex all and it seems to have run and genereated an olt, vob and vof file. I do not see any cue,iso type file that I can burn.

Hi DVD2SVCD,

many thanks for the fast reply.

I did a second try (recover), beginning with new encoding the audio.
(Sorry for the late reply, but my system needs 13h to make it :()

What did i change:
- I turn to RoBa 2pass (nice to know that now project related ini's were generate in the project folder)
- I reduce the destination size from 4480 to 4470 (the 1st try the Result was an Image with 4,704 GB!)
- I use the fixed chapters (the files were ript with DVDDecrypter, perhabs thats the reason why no chapter infos inside an the scenarist crashes in the 1st try ?!)
- I use the "CCE 2.6x Standard" Matrix (1st try -> "CCE 2.62 MPEG Standard")

The Result:
The encoding was OK (but why does the avg. BR dont change?), scenarist dont make problems like in the 1st try, so i think it was a chapter (DVDDecrypter) problem ?!

But the size is to big (see the massages)

What can i do to meet the target size exactly ??
(Why is the VIDEO_TS folder exactly 4,37GB big ??)

Do you need aditional infos??
Thanks for your support in advanced, its a great program :):)

I finally broke down and tried this dvd2svcd software. I'm really impressed with what it does so far.

I also had similar problems getting scenarist 2.7 to start but the newer beta seemed to fix that. At the moment, scenarist is running and using up 100% of my CPU...but no progress bar or any indication if its actually working yet :) I'll wait about 15-30 minutes and see if anything happens. Strange thing is, despite the "heavy" load on my cpu and the fact I can hear a change in the pitch of my CPU fan, the rest of the system seems very responsive...weird

I had a question about the audio. Why does it re-encode the AC3 using besweet? I have an extracted AC3 and encoded Ac3 and they're both the same size. Also, it doesn't use ac3delay to fix the Ac3? I always used ac3delay when doing this stuff manually.

I suppose if I can't get this last scenarist step to work that's not a big deal..I should be able to just go and import the m2v and ac3 files into it by hand.
I will try that next.
This is really fascinating though how you got all these programs automated.

Along those lines, I think the smart thing to do for the next several days is to not use Frame selection or anything but CBR or multipass. I have tried this with regular subs and both AC2 and MP2 sound(you can save some bitrate this way) and all worked well. Also remember to allocate something like 10 gigs of extra space over and above what would be used for a svcd.

Okie it doesn't work with scenarist. The scenarist process runs but I don't see a window in the taskbar or any disk activity. it goes into an endless loop, hence the massive CPU usage. I left it running for a half hour with no visible results.

I'll try importing the m2v ac3 files manually

Edited:

Ok its a problem with scenarist. it used to work..i haven't used it in months though. i guess something i installed broke it. now whenever i click on "new from script" or even try to export to a script, it locks up...stupid POS!! guess i'll try reinstalling it

and also to big :(

Right now i try another Film, this time with ripping using the internal routines and CBR (inkl. vaf), one sub-stream.
We will see.
But in the moment i'm not the only one who had these problems !

Has anyone got past the scenarist step and generated the proper file(s) ready to burn?

The furthest I got was DVD2SVCD started the scnearist script but quit before doing any work. I then manually muxed the files and scenarist genereated a DVD-Mux directory with a .VOF , .OLT, and .VOB file but there are no burnable files. DDogg mentioned that I should have an image file created in that directory.

I'm wondering if the scenarist script was not completely built and there are other parameters that were not initialized correctly. I don't know enough about scenarist to check out the configuration before I manually started the mux.

Don't know what else to try.

Have you tried just doing a few chapters of around 20 minutes total using simple cbr and say bilinear resize? No subs, no Frame selection. I just want to see if there is something wrong with your setup as I am having no problem here.

Well, I have made several DVD's movies using my latest dvd2svcd. Why yours fail I do not know. And since only about 10-20 people has problems with dvd2dvd and that it has been downloaded > 35000 tells me that there's somewhere a rare feature either in your settings, or in dvd2dvd or in those DVD's you're trying to convert. Please try answering these questions to your best ability:

1. Are you using 1 or 2 audio streams?
2. What types is the audio streams (AC3 or DTS or Both)?
3. Are you using Frameselection?
4. How long is the movie?
5. Are you using NTSC2PAL?
6. Are you using Subtitles?
7. Finally what's the movie title, region and where did you buy it?

I'm happy to say it worked!! I was able to back up LOTR TT (region1 NTSC).

I'm totally amazed at the size of the final result.
Its (4,703,903,744) on disk, and the total space available on a DVD-R is 4,707,319,808 bytes

Talk about using up all the space!

My problem with Scenarist was weird...basically my wnaspi32.dll got deleted from windows system32 folder...who knows how. so i got that back and it works now!

If you look at the log file, you'll see D2S uses BeSweet in "payload" mode to eliminate the AC3 delay. Basically the same thing that AC3DelayCorrector does, no re-encoding. However, I have found AC3Delay to be more accurate (BeSweet always cuts a little more than necessary). Also, if the AC3 has a positive delay, I found that 'BesWeet -payload' will create an invalid AC3 file... at least the last time I checked (Beta 14 IIRC). Maybe this has been improved now.

Ok, it seems to be the length of the movie, I have LOTR myself albeit region 2 but eDealer also had problems with R2 so I don't think that matters. So I'll test it tomorrow and see if I can figure out what goes wrong.

@RB: I was not aware that there was problems with BeSweet + AC3 + Positive delay. Funny I never have gotten any bugreports on that. Oh well. Maybe I should just use the muxer (bbmpeg or scenarist) to adjust the delay.

i had exact the same size as atreides93 but my DVD+R only have space for 4.700 so it is to big for + Media and fits on - Media.

DVD2SVCD, DDogg

I took one of the nine titles in Animatrix so I could test a lot faster. Used DVDShrink to strip it out and create new ifos and Vob file. Tested this and it plays fine.

1. Are you using 1 or 2 audio streams?
there are two audio tracks but I selected only one, the default.

2. What types is the audio streams (AC3 or DTS or Both)?
AC3

3. Are you using Frameselection?
NO
4. How long is the movie?
15 minutes
5. Are you using NTSC2PAL?
I don't think so.
6. Are you using Subtitles?
NO
7. Finally what's the movie title, region and where did you buy it?
Animatrix region 1 USA This Video [ G:\dvd

I used CBR, one audio, no subs,
I get to the Scenarist step, it looks like the import runs ok except for the following warning message:
Warning This Video [G:\dvd2svcdtest\muxed\Pulldown_Encoded_Video_NTSC.mpv ] has different duration.
that just fine then it just stops at the general tab with two warning messages:

Warning Quadrant or Sigma Design MPEG decoder is not present or the driver is not installed.
Warning Hardware decoding of video may not work.

Is there other information or screen shots that can help sort this out?

thx don

UPDATE

I can now produce the DVD files manually. The problem was I was not going to layout editor and setting Step 3 - Choose Operations and Press Start. Once I selected Create DVD Video and hit start, I got the VOB and IFO files created. These play fine.

OUTSTANDING PROBLEM

1) There is still something in my scenarist configuration or somewhere else that causes DVD2DVD to fail while building/running the Scenarist scripted step.

windtrader
2nd September 2003, 07:54
I came across this in the Import log. The line with ERROR seems like it may be causing the script to goof up.

Again, nothing major wrong with the actual data files since I can run the Layout Editor Step to create the DVD files and they play. This time I added a subtitle and two audio tracks.

@windtrader: Very odd error, but :( I have no idea why it fails. Maybe you should mail me your scenarist.ini file.

Positive delays are extremely rare. I've seen only one DVD so far (Monsters Ball RC2) that had a positive delay in an AC3 track. Again, the problem arises only if you use -payload and -ota. Maybe you should consider including AC3DelayCorrector and use it only if "Do not convert audio" is checked. It has a command line interface, shouldn't be too hard.

Hmm, I don't know. There's so many constellations of settings that I have to think things through carefully whenever I want to add/remove a program.

BTW folks, the DiscImage.dvd file in DVD-Muxed is an ISO file and you can use Daemon-Tools or Alchohol 120% to load it. You can also use it for image burning.

DVD2SVCD,
Where shall I send the scenarist.ini files? Is there some kind of "debug" mode I can turn on?

FYI - I completely removed both DVD2SVCD and Scenarist and reloaded them. I still get the same problem: the scenarist step stops after running the import. I then manually go to Layout editor, check the create DVD and image boxes, and Scenarist does its job and creates the expected files.

thx don

"Yeah, the chapters are wrong in NTSC. Will be fixed." --dvd2svcd

hmmm that's weird...dropframe fixed the audio outta synch as you discovered...I never did check this.

"BTW folks, the DiscImage.dvd file in DVD-Muxed is an ISO file and you can use Daemon-Tools or Alchohol 120% to load it. You can also use it for image burning." --dvd2svcd

That's EXTREMELY useful to to know. Simply associate .dvd extenstion with DVDDecrypter and when you double click it it'll pull up DVDDecrypter and just click BURN.
Open DVDDecrypter | Tools| Settings | Registry and under File Associations check ISO and DVD with dvddecrypter so when you double click on an .iso or .dvd it'll pull up the BURN in DVDDecrypter too.

"I'm totally amazed at the size of the final result.
Its (4,703,903,744) on disk, and the total space available on a DVD-R is 4,707,319,808 bytes

Talk about using up all the space!

My problem with Scenarist was weird...basically my wnaspi32.dll got deleted from windows system32 folder...who knows how. so i got that back and it works now!" --atreides93

Blank DVD-R 4,489MB 4,706,074,624 bytes or 4.383GB
Blank DVD+R 4,483MB 4,700,372,992 bytes or 4.377GB

Remember if you have 4,703,903,744 that'll fit on a DVD-R but if you ever wanted to make a backup of your backup DVD-R to DVD+R you'd be SOL.

yes ... aspi is REQUIRED for scenarist to function. For those who are failing I guess we can look at the top of the log and see which version they're using if any.
