1.85:1 movie ripped as 4:3 in DVDecrypter, et al

I've used vstrip and DVDecrypter on the movie The French Connection, and the VOB I get out of each is stretched 4:3 instead of anamorphic. The DVD plays fine on my TV in widescreen, as well as on my computers.

When I watch the DVD in WinDVD, the window aspect ratio shifts around a fair amount at the beginning with logos and warnings and THX, but even if I just rip a single cell in the middle of the movie, it's still 4:3.

Any ideas or suggestions or previous experiences with this effect? I've probably ripped 100+ movies and never had a problem. I tried ripping different cells with different programs on different computers, and all were distorted.

You probably want to examine the resulting ifo file and when you get to the vob stream description, make it 16 x 9.

Playing the raw vob files always leads to problems - which I assume you're doing?
Read the HDD playback guide on the doom9 website to find out how to play it back properly. The ifo files are required to tell the player how to play the vobs. If its not using them, weird things will/can happen.
