Weird problem when capturing

When i'm capturing from my VCR with either VDUB or AVI_IO I get this big white bar right in the middle of my vid.

Also before capturing, I can see that bar using PREVIEW instead of OVERLAY.

Whatever I do, that big white bar stays there.

I've tried two different versions of NVIDIA WDM 1.22 and 1.27.

I've tried VirtualDUB and AVI_IO.

And i'm not sure why but I cannot select anything else than UYVY YUV 4:2:2 Interleaved.

The colors on the captured vid are very bright, especially the white. I tried adjusting the Brightness and Contrast but it won't fix it. Its so bright that I can't even see thieir face.

Is this a retail tape or self-recorded?

This looks like the macrovision protection of the MVida drivers has kicked in. I'm not a aware of a de-macrovision for NVida ViVo. But maybe some others here in the forum know a solution.

Hi, I had the exact same problems:

I was using an Asus v8200 Deluxe, the first GeForce 3 card, before the "Titanium" chipset editions came out. As a capture board, it works fine, but only after a lot of fiddling.

For my first test capture, my sample video had macrovision protection. This manifested itself as a large horizontal white stripe right across the middle of my capture. This is deliberate, the board had detected the macrovision signal and imposed the white stripe to prevent the capture. Investigation with further unprotected videos revealed that poor quality sources would also mistakenly make the white stripe appear.

After investigation, I found out that an earlier version of the nVidia reference WDM driver would bypass the macrovision protection, specifically version 1.08. It took some finding, but eventually I found it here (http://205.158.109.140/Windows/23.11/WDM_1.08.exe). I removed the existing WDM drivers and installed v1.08. It worked: no more white stripe.

Now for the next problem: light colours in the captured samples would appear way too bright. Fiddling with the brightness and contrast capture settings could not resolve the problem. After further investigation here and on DVDhelp.com, it turned out that the video in port on the V8200 was more sensitive than video specifications stipulate. One solution is to make up a special s-video cable with a couple of resistors to compensate. This is not beyond my capabilities or resources, but it is a lot of mucking about. I opted for a work around solution.

This involved installing a couple of extra bits of software to work in conjuction with the WDM capture driver. Check out this thread (http://www.dvdrhelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=143442&highlight=v8200+gf3+geforce3) on how to do it.

Now my captures are actually very good. I was very impressed. I was capturing from VHS PAL at 720x576 interlaced and writing it to disk as an uncompressed AVI without dropping any frames. Colours and picture quality were surprisingly good, though I didn't try to capture any more than a few minutes.

But in the end, I found that it only worked well when the video source is of a reasonable quality. I could not get some of my poorer tapes to capture well. I could not get the colours sorted out and the stability of the captured image was poor. And that is why ultimately I went and bought a Canopus ADVC-100. I needed a capture system that was more adept at coping with poor tapes, because it is these that I wanted to preserve, restore and put on DVD.

On the other hand, the 1.08 worked perfectly
