Codecs and directshow filters

What determines which filter/codec is used to render, let's say a divx5 movie? I have divx5.05 codec and ffdshow filter and the media players choose ffdshow. Thanks in advance.

Playback under any directshow player is determined by the merit system, usually determined by what filters you have registered.
