View Full Version : Mpeg merge attempt yields incompatibility error

In TMPGEnc's Mpeg Tools, Merge & Cut, one mpg is deemed 'not compatible with other MPEG file'.

In "AVI MPEG RM WMV Joiner", the same story, except the error dialog is more specific: "Incompatible size[C:\'''''.mpg][288x320], [C:\'''''.mpg][288x352], Do you want to join" Yes OR No?

>>We're talking about video size compatibility here, right? If so, Windows Media Player properties for that first file has it at "379 x 288" The second, "375 x 288". There is a third file to be merged which "AVI MPEG RM WMV Joiner" didn't mention, and according to WMP, its dimensions are also "375 x 288". So which program has the dimensions correct?

What's the next step? How do I alter one of those files to match the others?

Thanks very much.;)

you can only merge files that are the same resolution and format, and maybe framerate & bitrate too; as far as i know.

since the 2nd & 3rd files match, you should be able to merge them together, you would have to re-encode the 1st file to the exact specification to match the other two, but the quality loss from re-encoding might stop you from doing so.

Ok. Do you mind explaining how to this?
I'll decide whether the loss of quality makes the process not worth it after I re-encode...

load the 1st file into tmpgenc (i'm assume you have this program, since you're in it's forum) choose System (Video only), cause you will only re-encode the video, unless the audio is different too, then choose System (Video+Audio), now go to setting and change the resolution to match files 2 & 3 and motion seach precision -> high or highest (this determines how much quality loss there will be)

again, i'm not sure about the bitrate, but to find out what you should put in as the bitrate, download Virtualdub, load in files 2 or 3, then go to File -> File Information and find out what it said for average bitrate and type in the bitrate.

this should all work in theory*, but 1st make sure you can merge files 2 & 3 together or it could be pointless to re-encode if none of them can be merged together.

I went through all steps successfully, except there ended up being no sound...

Any ideas as to why there wasn't any sound?

i don't know why there ain't no sound, might have left something out, but there how you get your sound:

in tmpgenc -> File -> Mpeg Tools -> Simple Multiplex, load the file you just encoded in the Video Input (the one with no sound), then load the orginal file (279 x 288) you uses to encode into Audio Input, then choose an different Output name or you might overwrite the files. that should be it.
