Capture stopped working

I have captured hundreds of TV shows. Everything was fine. I even upgraded from ATI All-In-Wonder Radeon (original DDR 32M) to an ATI All-In-Wonder Radeon 8500DV. Everything was still fine.

Then last nite, I installed DVDXCopy Express.

Now, suddenly, I cannot capture. It gives me the error:

You cannot use this device when another video application, such as a DVD, video conferencing, video editing, TV viewers, or WebTV for Windows is already using it. To use this device for your current application, close the application that is using it. If WebTV is installed and running on your system, pause the "WebTV video and data services" on the taskbar tray by right-clicking its icon and choosing "Pause Services". [OK]

Then: Error 418: Capture device was not detected.

It does the above two errors a few times (2 or 3) then says:

"VirtualDub cannot connect to the desired capture driver. Trying all available drivers."

then

"PANIC: Virtualdub cannot connect to any capture drivers!"


I uninstalled DVDXcopy. I think the Gear Drivers are uninstalled too, since I have no more c:\Program Files\321 Studios\ directory anymore.


Capturing TV is a daily thing for me. I've already missed programs as well...
Any suggestions?

maybe going thru the windows registry and deleting all the DVDXCopy values there. I know that I've had problems with uninstallations and not removing registry keys so it could be a start...

Hmm, that was a good suggestion, I tried it, but it didn't work.


I've already re-installed my video drivers about 2 or 3 different ways to no avail, also.


I really really don't want to re-install windows. I have about 90 programs I would have to re-install.

Another suggestion would be to use the Windows Restory option and set it back to a time befor you installed DVDXCopy. That might be a formidable solution...

Sounds like a good idea, but was that data necessarily being backed up all the time? I thought that only worked if you turned on Microsoft Backup.

Now, I hate to seem stupid, but in Windows 2000 I cannot figure out how to do what you said. Not even with the help and with 15 minutes of googling. How do I get to that?

Also, I would like to add that the problem:

* is NOT that I don't have a good capture driver

but

* IS that the driver is already in use by something else before virtualdub can ever get to it

I don't even know that reinstalling windows will fix the problem either, since this is a new video card (8500DV instead of original All-In-Wonder Radeon).


Does anyone know of a capture card that has s-video in, that I can use with Virtualdub (WDM) drivers? At this point, I'd rather buy a supplimentary capture card than re-install windows or deal with ATI's crappy drivers anymore....

So if my problem is that the driver seems to have already been "in use" by something, is there a way to figure out what?


That is, is there a program that could tell me what process it is that is using my driver? If there was, it could tell me the culprit, and I could perhaps uninstall it.

Any ideas?

Still no go. Re-install didn't even help.
This is the longest I've gone without recording a program since 1993 or so. I'm going to have to go back to VHS.

The "State" I was in before was having an AIW Radeon 32M with a certain set of drivers then changing to an AIW Radeon 8500DV with another set of drivers. Not reproduceable as I'm not about to change video cards, again, twice, just to extend this hell I live in.

Can someone just kill me instead please?

This is so lame I'm tempted to buy another computer. But if I do, and it comes with a capture card, that card probably wont have VFW drivers, so I still probably wont be able to use virtualdub, right?

So I wonder how I can find a capture card that supports VFW....

A lot of people are having various problems with capturing or tuning TV cards after this...

You know, I think I did in fact do so. Because I re-installed windows and wanted to patch up to the current version (silly me).

But... I gave up. Bought an AverTV Stereo (meant to get studio, whoops) tuner card for $50 and used the BTWinCap drivers and once I realized I can only view with preview and not overlay, things started working just fine. 640x480 in virtualdub.
