Re-encoding from .ASF and WMV ...

Hi guys I have a KiSS DP-500 DVD player (DivX/XViD capable) but it can't play neither ASF nor WMV files , so naturally, the only solution I have (except for praying that KiSS would support this formats in their next firmware :) ) is to re-encode .

The problem is that I can't find any tool that do the job :

1. DrDivX - crashes when trying to re-encode.

2. VirtualDub(Mod) - refuses to open .

3. TMGE - produces files without sound or with sound "shifted in time" .

4. DirectX's EditGraph can with limited success and after a lot of trouble to demux the file but after that I am unable to mux them back - sound gets out of sync. with time ... not the constant shift.

5. Gknot uses VirtualDub so it's the same as 2.

6. MS Media Encoder 9 produces files without sync. and with reduced quality.

The only program I found is called ASF Tools has a limited success with about 15% of ASF files , all others is get out of sync with sound. And if I use "reencode" option either on ASF or WMV file I am getting it out of sync and the quality is worsen a lot , sometimes all I get after either constant frame jumps (like only key frames were encoded) or a lot of huge rectangles of green colors with a bit of huge rectangles of blured original video ...


So can someone suggest a good tool or procedure to re-encode this formats ?

You can use dBPowerAmp to extract the Audio-Part first to WAV.

Actually I already tried to repack ASF to WAV and YUV16 AVI using GraphEdit , the problem that I was unable to mux it back correctly..
The problem that if I even succeed to syncronize the start it still gets shifted with time , not to mention that video quality reduced significantly.

Install avisynth (from www.avisynth.org ). Open notepad. Write: DirectShowSource(c:\youfile.wmv,fps=files_framerate) Click file - save as. write "something.avs" to the filename box. Put also the quotes to the box. Open your avisynth file with some video program.

I've experimented quite a bit using Dr DivX (v1.02) and have found it to be very stable.

It even allowed me to transcoded the WMV9 (.wmv) 1440x816 High-Def T2 trailer (available on the M$ website) direct to DivX at 1440x816.

You may need to take more drastic action with your PC and clear out some old redundant files, dll's, codecs etc!

I am not sure about WMV9 but WMV7 and ASF crashed DrDivX as soon as I hit "Encode" button - tried with about 15 different files ...

However, they will have to be short clips, below 1MB!

How I can Zip to 1MB something that about 300MB :)

If you want I can FTP it to you if you have a server , or I can give you example like this : go to IRC irc.scifi-fans.net (standard port 6667) , join the #ds9 chanell or #tvseries chanell and get any of .ASF or .WMV you find there (in DS9 ).
All of them cause a crash to Dr.DivX but plays fine.

Btw: the files that crash DrDivX has a following "composition" (according to GSpot) : Video - MP43 , Audio - WMAudioV2 .

Yep,

Tested DrDivX on an WMV7 file and 'crash'!

I used EO Video products over a year ago. No bad.

Still no 2pass encoding yet I suppose!

I've tried EO-Video too. Not bad, but slow and no 2pass Encoding.
But why you don't give dBPowerAmp a try to extract the Audio-Part?
After that, you can use TMPEGenc to encode the WMV and WAV to MPEG (even AVI, if you like), without any problems.

Because after that for some reason with 90% of the files you have to spend couple of hours resinchronizing the audio.

Thanks, tried EO Video - very nice , but no 2 or n pass encoding and impossible to transffer stream "as it is" , it always recompress - this means loosing quality ...

Because after that for some reason with 90% of the files you have to spend couple of hours resinchronizing the audio.

It's a shame you don't have an Xcard with the Jove Player GUI. As I can am able to play WMV7, 8 and 9 files and view them on my TV!

That said you may find it easier to re-encode your WMV7 and 8 files to DV.AVI spec (using M$ WinMedia encoder application) and then convert the DV.AVI to an 2pass VBR DivX encode using VirtualDub or DrDivX!

Thanks for suggestion , but my comp and big TV in a different rooms and I did not wanted to have another comuter box near my TV ...

About your suggestion - I may try it , before I just converted them to DivX AVIs using M$ Encoder and had a very poor quality as a result, but AV AVIs sounds as good idea to try , I will report back here on the results...

I've been very pleased with the Xcard and Jove player GUI. Because one of the aspects of my companies work is to provide PC's and large displays for exhibitions etc. We've been able to experiment with cabling.

The Xcard is able to throw out very good stable voltages and as such works very well at cable runs of 20 meters (66 feet). Using either composite, S-VHS or RGB connections. Even the digital electrical audio output works well. It's even possible to extend the remote control sensor cable!

This sounds interesting. I've tested the XCard, but tested not the voltage.
If you are right, this card is a good choice for Presentations/Exhibitions.

Just tested , there is no way in M$ Windows Encoder to produce something other then WMA or WMV files , so no DV AVIs :(

You could always try TMPGEnc to generate an DV.avi or very high bitrate Mpeg1 or 2. Mpeg 1 would be better though!

If you are right, this card is a good choice for Presentations/Exhibitions. Yes, it's a most excellent card for such uses. We've been using these cards since the came out. And with the Jove player GUI everything can be controlled from simply pointing the remote control at the monitor. Our clients really love it!
