I made a VCD about 6 months ago and when I try to play it back now it plays back in black and white. When I was splitting the movie in TMPEGEnc I accidentally set the stream type to 'MPEG-1 (automatic)'. I have extracted the MPEG data using VCD Gear and tried running it through MPEG Mediator(which seems to be very tollerant of corrupted/non-standard MPEG files) gives the error 'Component 'Demultiplexer' reports the following problem: MPEG program stream timestamp underflow'. Is there any way to restore color to this MPEG?

Try demultiplexing again (use tmpgenc or bbmpeg tools) and multiplex as standard-compliant VCD.
Colour should not be affected by how you mux, though. Is it maybe a question of PAL vs. NTSC-playback?

I encoded as NTSC-Film so it couldn't be a PAL/NTSC problem. After re-muxing the streams it would still not playback in color in any DirectShow based player. MPEG-Mediator and VirtualDub(1.5.4 unmod) would display it in color though. VDub also complains about missing frames or something every minute or so.
